My first attempts at Trompe l\'oiel

No Remorse

Hey all

I haven\'t posted much on this forum, usually I am found at 40kO. Anyway I want to get the insight of all the great painter\'s on this board and pick your brains.

Here are a couple WIP pics of the Vet of a termie squad I am doing up for the Canadian GD. I am mainly concerned with the Trompe l\'oeil and whether it looks realistic.

Please feel free to give whatever criticism you think is constructive

Thanks in advance

Well I had to go to google to find out what Trompe l\'oeil means and it still doesnt help. Are you asking if the ageing looks good or the OSL? not sure what you mean. The bone looks good tho.

I believe its the effect of implying aging etc where there is in reality none. But dont take my word for it im on the beer again tonight. :)

To be honest your mini is looking ok but the chest and head look too forced. It still looks painted on. Also the chest \"ribcage\" looks flat. Also I am not keen on the skull ontop of the bolter. It looks very cartoony.

probably not the criticism you want to hear but if you are entering a GD these things matter, plus the beer makes me very honest. :)

I think the weathering and cracking on the bone is pretty good actually. It\'s quite convincing. Though you may have even gone a little overboard on quantity ;)

All good critiques and exactly what I am looking for. Since this is my first GD any advice is good.
Keep it coming!

I think that if you\'re going to do anything more to it, you could do a bit more highlighting, but that\'s it. As it is, it\'s pretty damn good.

Trompe l\'oeil (or however you spell it) is making something look very 3D on a 2D surface

This is an example - violin

I have seen something very similar where a hung up violin was painted on a door, and it looked extremely realistic. This can be seen in Chatsworth house in the UK

Some \"trompe l\'oeil\" (in my town) :

@No Remorse : The cracks are convincing but you might want to apply warmer browns on the bones and apply more highlights like Modderrhu suggested to bring out the details.

In miniature painting, trompe l\'oeil usually refers to the painting of freehand notches and scratches, such as on cyril\'s marines, here is an example:

There is a tutorial by klute showing how to do simple notches here on CMON:

http://www.coolminiornot.com/article/aid/359

although there is a more advanced, and in my opinion better, tutorial by kaple on his site, here:

http://kaple.dk/?page=tutorials&id=81

As far as your miiature goes no remorse, if this is the effect you were looking for, I think you need to make the line on the under edge of the scratches more defined; you can use white even with the black armour, just make sure the line is very thin.

Yep Rune and Cyril are excellent at this effect.
Thanks for mentioning my tutorial as well. It is really the very basics of the effect.

Thanks again. I was worried that going white might have been tto stark I will try it out and see what the reults are.

I was talking to my friend Silphid and he mentioned the warmer tones on the bone as well, so I guess I better go ahead and do that ;)

More highlighting to come lol

If the damage to the right shoulder pad is painted on, it looks fantastic.
My only additional comment on the bones is to narrow the black crack on his head. It looks more like he opened a bottle of black ink too fast.

Yup it is painted.

Unfortunately the middle crack on the head is actually molded, but the side cracks are painted. I may just put in some finer cracks to give the temple a more weathered look.

like many techniques, subtle use is often the best.

the odd chip, scratch etc looks great but to much and the mini can become messy.

i only use a lot of it when i want to do a flag stone base as i can freehand it quicker than scuplt then paint.

I have to agree with vincegamer, the crack on top is pretty bold. If it\'s molded into the mini that wide, you might want to tone down the black, maybe add a little more bone color at the edges to reduce the width some so it\'s not so glaring. Otherwise, it looks good and weathered to me; the ribs and the kneepad look great. The bolter skull is a little less than scary tho lol, but maybe you could file the edges a bit to make it more angular.
