My first ever sculpt (wip)- Advice needed!

Fizl

Secret Crocodile
Hose are tights :) You could go for a tear drop shape, that is rounded at the top and a point at the bottom, that would go well with the grail knight look rather than a round shield

Things are coming along o.k; I FINALLY MADE A HAND! (One that looks like a hand also, and is the right size for the model :)

Here\'s a picture
handro7.jpg

My cloak was a bit floppy, so I\'m going over it with milliput to makeit more rigid, I think I\'m going to give my guy a scale mail skirt type thing, then tights/leggings and leather boots - if I can\'t do leather boots I\'ll try something metal, (i had a try at doing scales, they look like roof tiles, anyone got a method for doing them?

Any opinions on the shape of the shield are welcome, and also yes/nos on whether or not I should do a thing around the edge, not sure what to call it, but like a thin strip of metal, maybe with little rivets, running all the way. Also how would this type of curved shield be held? two straps/something else?

@ Fizl - is that the shield shape you meant?

All thoughts and opinions welcome!

p.s. mattsterbenz cheers for the hands tut, works a charm! :) I found a leaflet from an event I attended, turns out it\'s exactly how the GW sculpters do it :)

YAY COMMENTS! :)

Thanks DaN and Taikisama

@ DaN That\'s what the problem was! Now you\'ve pointed it out it\'s obvious, next time I get out the green stuff I\'ll make a few more balls, it\'sone of the best uses for that bit spare ever, at the moment i\'ve only got big ones.

I made a mock up to test pose etc, here\'s a picture:

mockup1ze7.jpg

Edit : Found one! about 2/3 the size of the one on the current pictures, looks much better!

I think I prefer the new sword, the tip of my old one broke of, yay/nay?

The shield can also go at an angle which makes the top fit perfectly into the crease in the cloak, I\'m not sure which I\'ll choose, if I decide to have him holding a shield at all that is.

The right arm/left hand+wep and cloak are still copletely detatchable, so any suggestions on pose are welcome and doable. - I still would love any advice on how to do scale mail/an alternative for an armoured skirt, I think chain mail would be overkill would it not?

Lend me your wisdom! Your thoughts cannot be plagiarised by me if I can\'t read them!

p.s. DaN Your AA Van + Space Marine drawing made me chuckle :)

He is coming along quite nicely! The hand looks good.:) One thing to keep in mind is the thickness of the fingers. The little finger appears to be a bit larger than the rest. Not to worry though, you can easily add a VERY tiny amount of putty to the index and middle fingers to counteract this.

Good job on the back of the hand too :D

I\'ve got big balls, and she\'s got big balls, but We\'ve got the biggest balls of them all! lol

Oh I HOPE that becomes someone\'s signature :D lol

Cheers mate - for anyone wondering:

That AA van picture.

Thanks for the comments guys :D!

Had a bit of a break from sculpting, going to get to work on my dogs of war army, which means I have to learn how to paint skin :p

I\'m having problems with sculpting scale mail, I just can\'t get to grips with it, I\'d like to do the triangular type, any tips on how to do these over cloth?

skirtuc5.jpg

I\'d like to do them kind of like this

http://www.coolminiornot.com/191848

(amazing skeleton by the way!! :))

If I can work out how to do them, then I\'ll do them coming from under a big belt, which will make the body look like it\'s not too long, and break up the center a little (not to mention give me something to paint which isn\'t metal! :)

On the subject of skeltons, I\'ve nearly finished my first cursed company skele, I\'d really appreciate any tips on how to spruce it up a little, having never painted a large amount of bone before it took me a long time :p. Here it is :

Also how to do the stone axehead? I was thinking of doing the shield a strained yellow +something else when finished, but still not sure, I\'ll practice it on something els first :)

As ever I live (/post) for your comments and thoughts!!

Update:
dsci0647apx5.jpg

So i FINALLY worked out how to do scales I\'m happy with, it only took me 2 weeks and about 4 attempts!!

Here\'s my dude so far, all advice welcome, particularly concerning what to do on his legs (which look a bit like they belong to a ballet dancer let\'s face it :)).

>By the way his scales do fit in place properly, it\'s just they\'ll only fit perfectly when glued, and i needed my hands to use the camera)
Also to the left is my 2nd sculpt-first ever in warhammer scale.

HOW SMALL IS WARHAMMER?!!??!? After crossing that boundry it was just the age old problem of trying to work out what on earth cloth does in wind (i was at work sitting on a bench, there was no internet for inspiration!)

Please reply, i\'ve no idea what type of armour/boot/clothing to do on my dudes legs to keep with the tone of the sculpt so far.

also - ideas on the arms of the wizard i\'m making? the left hand will be holding fire, so what should the right do? (they\'re just there for playing around at the moment and can be changed :)

thx in advance! :p

Looking good so far. Would have replied earlier but I\'ve been really busy :D

The one thing that jumps out at me first is his waistline. I would expect the scales to be dressed over his chainmail shirt. One way to get around that is just sculpt a belt over it (but I assume you\'ll do that anyway).

Two thoughts for the legs:
-Chainmail paints, and tall leather boots,
-Leather pants, shorter leather boots.

Keep on sculpting!

I thought I sent you a reply in the PM about it, but with how flaky my internet is, and the fact that I can\'t see if I replied to a message afterwards, it wouldn\'t surprise me if it didn\'t get to you.

If it didn\'t I\'ll be glad to help you out. :)

I\'m going to tak a good look at some basic warhammer ones, and then do some sketches to see if it helps, I\'ll keep you up to date with pictures :)

Woo, always a treat to see my topic top of the forum, because then I know I have replies!

They\'re going to be really useful, thanks so much! I\'m going to read it about a thousand times, then have another go at sculpting a female head :D, and the boots bit should be really helpful for my large sculpt also.

Thanks loads for the feedback, all is welcome :)

(particularly on ideas for the arms on my sorceress sculpt - I don\'t mind it being a cliche or anything, staff? orb? Right hand over head/left hand extended?

Anything and everything really appreciated as ever :)
