My first go =) Santa Marine and Helpers

My brother got me hooked on this idea of painting miniatures. I\'m a bit of a newb, but am pretty happy with my first go!

I got a basic set of space marines and a basic set of dwarfs (games workshop I believe).

Santa marine and helpers

I haven\'t learned how to do the cool bases that I\'ve seen you guys do. Any hints or tips would be gratefully accepted. I\'m currently working my way through some of the awesome tutorials on the site. I followed them for my marines and santa was just for fun =)

Very amusing. The photo is a bit off, but that\'ll come with time. You\'ll find the voting syncs with good photos a lot, so if you\'ve skipped over that tutorial you might want to revisit it.

If I had to make a criticism, it would be with the black lining. Its not as smooth as it could be, but that\'s just because I had to find SOMETHING to nit pick.

I like your sense of humour and it is nice to see something painted just for fun. If that is your first go then you will turn out to be one fine painter when you have mastered your technique. What you have done is very neat and clean for a newbie to painting minis. You seem to have the basics down quite well. The control with blacklining will come with time and pratice but you also need to watch those mould lines as from memeory there were a few on the helmets. When you just want to get stuck into painting, cleaning all the mould lines off can be a pain in the butt. It is one of my,and I guess many others, pet peeves and something I dislike doing but the preparation pays off in the long run. The lines don\'t look so prominent on an unpainted mini but they stand out like \"dogs b***s\" when drybrushed.

I will keep looking out for your next piece of work.

First go?! Good job! I remember mine being a swampy mess lol
Seems like you did your homework, keep asking questions, practice away ,and you\'ll be up with the best of them in no time by the look of it ;)
Fantastic idea btw lol

Great first project. Nice to see you wanted to try something different from the start. Says something about the creativity we might expect once you\'ve got more experience with the techniques. You have already added details most first timers wouldn\'t even try.

Kudos!

Thanks for the nice comments =)

It took me way longer to do than it would have taken any of you guys, I\'m sure!

I *do* have a couple of technical help questions if people don\'t mind answering?

I used the paints almost as they came out of the little jars (not sure what the technical term is). They\'re Games Workshop ones \'cos I live in Australia and I think we don\'t have a huge range - not that I could see anyway, more likely to be my lack of knowledge I suspect!

A few issues I have:

1. I tried to water down the paint, but it just seemed to pool up and blotch. I ended up with the top part of whatever I painted being almost paint free and the bottom kind of accumulating more. Also sometimes there were little bubbles, and the brushstrokes were obvious. Is your milk thicker than mine or is my technique to blame?

2. I tried a little bit of mixing on the marines, I used enchanted blue for the base and then used a mix of enchanted and ice blue for the highlights, with an attempt at a tiny bit of pure ice blue for the edges. Is it best to mix a lot of a colour and if so where do you keep it. I mixed a little in a lid and now it\'s solid plastic (although a cool colour solid plastic) =)

3. Just how do you mix? I don\'t have much money and when I made my mixes using a brush to transfer paint from one pot to the lid to mix, a fair bit of paint gets wasted on the brush. I tried an eyedropper, but again, most of the paint stays in the eyedropper because it\'s thick I think, and the eyedropper just kinda blew paint bubbles!

I have more questions, but you\'re all being nice enough as it is! I\'ll push my luck on more later!

Thanks for the encouragement!

I havn\'t been round these parts long and I\'m not very well versed to answer you questions on GW paints and thinning, I would imagine best bet would be to check thru the forums there are alot of great walk thru\'s on paint mixing and water to paint ratios, it may be hard feilding a response here but the painting forum should be a big help for any question you got on mixing and thinning any brand of paint. As for the pooling up on your mini I would just keep a bit of paper towel and dap off the excess paint keep enough on the brush to work but not enough to cause a puddle effect. Hope this help and great start keep it up

simmuskhan, have you tried the oz painters forum? by using the cool mini forum as well as the oz painters forum you will get evn more help.
(and you may get lucky with the oz painters forum and find some one lives near you who could show you consistancies etc as it\'s far easier to learn by being shown instead of by applying theory)

A christmas card came from GW to the local game store, it had Dryads on the front with christmas tree ornaments and lights strung on them. I thought that was pretty funny! lol

Maybe I will snap a quick pic when I go there tomorrow.
