My first painting competition

Ok so I tried to take some photo's last night and then couldn't find the lead to my camera. So far I did the skin and base of the armour but decided last night the skin was badly done so redid. I have primed with Orkhide shade watered down, then added a little gretchin Green to the mix with some water. Let it dry and washed over with brown ink. Tonight i'll be taking Dark Angels Green, then gradually add goblin green until im up to just Goblin Green. Then maybe add either skull white or bleached bone as my highlight. I'll do my utmost to get pictures and a WIP started

I've been told by more than one GD judge that after selecting the best of the category they start looking for mistakes. Make sure you correct as many mistakes as you can find. A basic "clean" job will very often beat a more complicated or complex entry with shiny new techniques and lots of errors.

I say this, plus a good base. I think basing is more important than people realize. And Gold will be the best mini, Silver will be the best mini with the lest number of flaws, and the Bronze next. But as mentioned, post photos for some help. And good luck!

Hi Drunken Elf. I use both GW Lakeside and Bluewater stores ;-) When is this comp? Been keeping an eye on your WIP, looking good so far. There are some good tips for yellow armour around. A great article can be found on www.Wiltrichs.com as he paints a lot of imperial fist marines and as yellow is difficult he put his step by step on there.

Hope all is going well....is the comp and open one or restricted to certain model ranges?

Cheers

Nah, you should enter matey. Its fun just putting your mini in the ring with other peoples. I entered a comp in that store not too long ago and came runner up. The funniest thing is the bloke that won didn't even come and enter his mini. He got his wife to bring it down!! It was a mixed vote between store regular kids voting for their mates minis and the staff voting seriously. Good fun all the same. If nothing else the comp will focus your attention and push you real hard.

Cheers

Hmmmm i may well enter anyway. Its quite annoying that all the kids vote for their friends tho. I think they seperate young bloods (under 15's) though, although there are some damn good 14 year old painters out there....hate naturally talented people right :p haha

Could I get some advice. I've just bought some Solid Water 50ml and want to create a water effect around the below base. Showing just the tip of the treasures poking out the water. Was also thinkining of hanging a teeny bit of lichen from the rock then varnsish it under the rock to give the impression of the water level lowering. Is the best idea to sellotape or plastic card around the entire edie of the base, seal it with vaseline or plastesine then just pour the water to the desired level? How do you get the ripple effect, tooth brush?
