You might find the problem grows with age...

Micha, I don\'t know how old you are, but up to a certain point your parents will aprove of your hobby, if it means you aren\'t out drinking, ****ing, ****ing and ****ing. Unfortunately, the hobby gets more difficult to explain as you get older.

As a forty-something bloke who has to wear a suit, it is an education walking into a Games Workshop where they don\'t know you.....As Dragonsreach will confirm lol

Well it seems that there is a stigmata attatched to mini painting.I know this from first hand experience in \"coming out\" with my freinds,who all sniggerred and sneared.They called me names and really put me down,making me feel so ashamed of myself that I gave up the hobby for several years.
This is where I discovered MPA or mini painters anonamous.This helped a great deal in subdueing my feelings for \"the pewter\" and even stopped me from painting alltogether for several years.
The problems started at the same time as the \"voices from the bits box\",first a whisper gradually rising to a great crashendo of a multitude of noises.I broke down and gave in to them,painting 26 Dwarves in one sitting,only stopping to breathe.Not eating or going to the toilet I was finally found by my partener in my own excrement,brush in one hand and goblin in the other.:|~
These days Im restricted to no more than 1 mini per week.The voices are still there but they are under control now as I am there master.They know whos boss.
Must go now.Terry the Stone Troll is asking for his stone axe to be painted.:(

I had a girlfriend once who didn\'t actually do anything mini-related, but always at least pretended to listen when I\'d babble on...

As for friends thinking it\'s lame, it\'s all a matter of personal preference. the next time he rags on mini-painting, rag on how stoopid it is to be a product of 7-9 major corporations who control almost everything, and support child slave labor in SE Asia.

I had the same problem. It was then that I discovered the name-calling and put-downs had nothing to do with painting. They just thought I was an a**h*lelollol

Echoes of familiar disappointment & confusion....

Oh dear, reading this thread just reminds me how much in a minority I am with my work colleagues etc. They just look at me dumbfounded when I point excitedly to a new figure in the latest WD mag. However, I am a hit with most of their kids which is kinda cool :)

When I show my mum my latest creation she nods appreciatively, squinting at the figure after finally trying on the 3rd pair of glasses and murmurs \"Oh...that\'s nice dear\"

As a painter, I am very pale - no danger of me being out in the healthy sunshine, when I could spend all day inside painting or gaming :)

*sigh* this is why I love my extended CMON family - nice to have a rant and rave, or show appreciation for a nicely painted figure, or just have a collabrative *drool* over Rackham\'s latest offerings with all my fellow painters....

It must be doubly hard for you, if you are not talking about curtains, quiche, yoga and diets.:rolleyes:

The ironic thing is, if you were organically tie-dyeing, plaiting placentas or compromising the structural integrity of your house by replacing structural members with \'distressed MDF\' you\'d be well in:bouncy::flip:

Hmm..I think you are better off \'well out\':D

Friends: Like it but won\'t participate.
Mother: Loves the painting part only.
Father: prolly doesn\'t know much about it.
Sisters: completely neutral on it.

Friends: only one of them paints sometimes and he\'s greedy, the others do not care too much
Mother: Loves the painting part only.
Father: Likes the base sculpting, but does not care bout painting a lot
Sister: only says \"wow\" every time :eek:
Brother: he likes but has no art skill so he won\'t even try
Girlfriend: has just started painting one mini, she asks for advices every 3.2 seconds :flame:
Grandparents: too blind to see :D

I remember once, while having a family get together here at our house, I showed my niece one of my minis.

Her father, my brother-in-law, a very practical fellow, just looked at it and said \"what do you do with it?\"

I said \"the same thing I do with the other hundreds of these I have on my shelf. Just paint them and look at them.\"

He said \"HUNDREDS?\" and gave me a very \'what a waste of time, money, and effort\' look.

I was a little embarrassed at that point, and the subject got dropped in favor of the weather, or taxes....

The sad thing is, I kind of lied to him. I don\'t have \"hundreds\", its more like \"over a thousand\".

It really is a waste of time, effort, and money, but damn, I love it so... lollol

that \"what do they do?\" rational can be applied to so much it just make syou wonder if the people asking the question have a soul.
mind you there is far and away a huge difference in goals when painting minis. some people play with them so the answer is easy.
but those that paint to display are in line for the same \"waste of time\" argument any artist, musician, race car driver will cop!
oh well! at least i don\'t have to explain to anyone why i\'m a lawyer :D

My mom tends to encourage my painting etc. as she likes to brag about my \"artistic talent\" to friends of hers. My father dosen\'t like sharing the garage and has been know to brake my models on purpose, which somehow slakes his anger
my only friend that does it is james (dennismech) and it tends to be the main point of all conversation between us
my brother dosen\'t really care about them

I am too lazy/ haven\'t met anyone i like enough to have a girlfriend

Yep, I\'m pretty average, too. Mom is all supportive and such of my hobby, although I try and keep the cost of them secret.....*THEY COST WHAT!!!!! WE COULD HAVE INSULATED THE HOUSE WITH THAT MUCH MONEY!!!!*.....followed up by a good hour long lecture/tirade.....As for my dad, he\'s kinda athletic and sporty (In other words, the kid who would\'ve beaten me up in school) So, he\'s kinda malicious with em\', and, like Strongbad, I find inexplicably squashed minis lying in grotesque positions in his garage.......Not only that, but EVERY single time I mention minis, I have to re-explain what they are all over again, taking a good half-hour......
DAD: *So, you mean, you\'re playing with toys? At your age?*
ME: *No, dad, M-I-N-I-S*
DAD: *So.....toys, then*\"
ME: *ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!*

And I haven\'t had many girlfriends, but if\'n I do, I tend go with the artsy type.....and problem solved.....:]

Eyes that see.....

You have to learn to appreciate painted minis I have discovered...it takes time, knowledge and is an art in itself.

I look at a well painted mini and see: shading, highlights, NMM, excruciatingly fine detail, lightsourcing, SENMM, jewel effects, quality basing etc. I will also realise if any conversion work has been carried out.

My wife will look at the same mini and see a toy soldier. Mind you, if I point out the details above she is suitably impressed, or at least pretends to be:D

Fiancee- Used to paint and was great at it, gave up before I met him and is now conviunced its not worth him painting ever agian because he can never be as good as me (his words, not mine!) :( It saddends me because I\'d really like to share the hobby that I love with him.

Mum- encourages my artistic side but would rather I painted glassware to sell rather than minis I think. Probably thinks I spend to much.

Dad- She\'s the same as Mum really, encouraging but doesn\'t really understand the hobby but appreciates my artistic talent in other ways. If she complains about how much I spend on minis, I just remind her how much she spends on clothes and makeup. :p (in case you\'re wondering she had a sex change a while back :) )

Friends - varies but some of them are into warhammer and as such appreciate well painted minis.
