Looking at both posts I\'d say your main issue at the moment is the photography - neither post is showing the mini off as best it could. It takes a lot of practice and patience to get good photos of minis (I know this from experience) it\'s a balance of good lighting, steady camera and the right distance to get everything clear and in focus without being too \"in your face\". Take lots and lots of photos under different conditions and lighting settings etc to see how different they can be and pick the best.

The painting itself looks quite good, you picked out details like the eye and teeth and the colours are well chosen too. It does look as though you\'re not thinning your paints enough which adds to the rougher look of the mini overall so there\'s an area you can work on. You\'ve based him which is good even if it\'s a little greener than usually associated with Space Marines.

It\'s important not to get worked up about scores this early on in your painting - we\'ve all had bad scores and yes sometimes it\'s hard not to take personally but the important thing is to be happy with what you\'re producing and keep looking to improve. The more upset you seem to be about it, the more snipers will think it\'s funny to mark you down. I\'d say from the evidence here, you\'re going to be a damned good painter if you keep at it.

Typical first post errors (see mine if you don\'t believe it.)

Photo focus: Either set your f-stop higher or set your shutter open longer. Either will increase your depth-of-field (the distance away from the camera that can be in focus). In your case, the feet are in focus, but the left arm and upper body are not. Sadly, if you pics are not in focus, we cannot see the details well enough to vote on it.

Check out the articles section on photography tutorials. Check out the photography section.

Are you using a tripod?
Do you have any manual options on your camera?

Brush control looks pretty good from what I can see.
The eyes look a bit large. But not bad.

The paints look thick, and you already know that the photography needs work.

I think this is a difficult mini to photo, since it has so much stuff sticking out to fool the lens.

(And as I wrote this, two much more helpful comments were posted, so I\'ll stop.)

Well, I voted a 5 on the commander pic when he came round on the voting link, so there! You were lucky, I know sod-all about space marines so I skip them about half the time. ;)

Everyone has already said helpful things about painting and photography, so I\'m not going to repeat their wise words. I will say, however, that it peeves me when people give their minis vague names, or don\'t bother to change the name from \"Another mini\". To me, it always suggests that the painter has little pride in their work.

In all fairness the scores shouldn\'t bother you, The scores them selves ain\'t everyone\'s views on your model its just the average number from your total votes. I like you am still rather new to the hobby and my models don\'t get scored highly either. Yes it can be depressing to think you\'ve done a \"kick ass job\" on a model and want to share it with everyone only to be disappointed with the score it receives, we\'ve all been there.
As most have already said its about practise practise practise. There\'s lots of people here willing to give advice on how to improve your painting, I for one have been more less lectured now for 2 months on painting, also helped me get better at photo taking since I can send pictures back and forth, so I\'m killing 2 birds with 1 stone! And I\'m seeing the results in my work.
Just persist in practising and may be take time out every now and then to take photo\'s of your work to practise your camera skills.

Nick.

I missed the first post. 4+/- is low for this mini. Paint control looks ok. It is based. A bit of blending on the face (beard shadow). I gave it a 5.5 (clicked 6), because it is better than most of the stuff you see on a table around here.

No or very little shading/shadowing on the armor. There is some blacklining on the boot, but the toe area was missed. A dark red/brown wash would do the armor wonders.

Take out the word \"Another\" in the title. It annoys me to no end when posters are not bothered to change the \"another mini\" title (automatic -1 from me).

Overall:

Not bad. Keep painting and asking. You will get better. (You should see some of these people\'s first minis - don\'t feel bad at all.)

That is about where one of my first minis scored and I was very proud of him. Funny thing is that it is still used weekly in our campaign.
