Well, considering I\'ve seen people whine about sniping when they\'ve recieved an 8 on a figure they considered a 10... ;)

\"anonymously and purposely trying to drive a score down\" - I\'d say this is a pretty good definition. It\'s very tough to nail down anything more definative.

I\'d say anything more than two points below it\'s current score, but what if you\'re one of the first voters and you come upon a shite mini currently at 8.5 or something???

Personally, I don\'t think that there is a valid reason for giving a 1. Can anything really be 4 steps lower than tabletop quality??? But that\'s just my personal opinion.

Another scenario: If I\'m one of the first voters on a mini and it\'s what I consider grossly undervalued either because the poster started it way too low or an early low vote or two - say it\'s currently rated at 4 and I think that it\'s clearly a 7+ - am I \"sniping\" if I vote it extra high in order to bring it more into line with where I think it should be?

Thanks. Just checked my record of 345 pages, the first 18 pages are scores of 10, the last 6 pages are scores of 3 or less (two miniatures earned a 1 from me. One is \"The left talon of roc\"). I\'d say my average is about 7 (though that\'s a guess).

Oh! I agree. He has every right to give whatever score he sees fit, especially if he\'s willing to leave his name. I\'m just saying don\'t go around tossing out 1\'s at others and then bitch when someone does the same to you. It\'s a bad combination: being bold in your criticism of others and thin-skinned when recieving any.

Which is why I said I was in \'slight\' defense. ;)

People who live in glass houses and all that rot.

But, just for discussion, can we define \'sniping\'?

I think a 1 CAN be a legitimate vote. Not saying that I give or want to recieve them, but some 1\'s can be justifiable.

I would define sniping as \"anonymously and purposely trying to drive a score down\"

What say you?

Where do compensators fit in? I often mark a mini one point below what I think it\'s actually worth, somatimes even two points. This is only on minis that I think are a point or two over-rated. I wouldn\'t say it\'s an attempt to drive down a score (as it is statistically insignifigant), it\'s more a point of princaple.

Any other compensators out there?

EDIT / Yeah, what Dauber said :)

Ahhh, the joys of simultaneous posting :D

I\'d say that probably us \"compensators\" balance each other out in the long run - the \"up\" compensators\" and the \"down\" compensators.

And I think Vince would be proud of your \"1\" vote on RToR :D

I\'m not sure if a \'compensator\' is a sniper.

ok...here is a better definition...

\"Anonymously and maliciously trying to drive the score down\"

I think the \'compensator\' isn\'t being mean.

I\'m not telling anyone how to vote here, but when I vote, I have the score \'hidden\'. I\'m not swayed by the current score since I can\'t see it. So, I don\'t feel the need to correct the score. If anything, I vote about a point higher than the \'average\'.

Ooo, yeah

I think \"maliciously\" is a good addition to the definition.

I haven\'t turned the scores off, but I try not to look at the current score until I\'ve pretty much made up my mind. Then I\'ll compare my idea to the current score. If I\'m low, I\'ll look again to see if there\'s something I overlooked. Much like you, though (surprise  surprise) I generally find that I naturally score about a point higher than the average. Oddly enough, that seems to change at the very top. While I\'m an \"easy\" 5, 6, 7 or 8, I\'m a tough 9 and an even tougher 10.

I think Tony\'s a good guy....

But, I have moderated a large number of Tony\'s comments and had to delete a fair few in the process. I have also PM\'d Tony about why I have deleted his comments. Tony is definitely in the \'throw stone glass house\' situation.

Sorry Tony, but I have no doubt that you have made a fair few \'enemies\' on this site with your votes and comments who just couldn\'t wait to get their own back.

Fair play to you thought for doing it openly. I hope you come back and re-post your minis.

Well, the way I checked it was to go to \"Browse Gallery\" and sort by \"My Votes\". Then, to see how many low votes I\'d given, I flipped back to the last few pages. There\'s no real way to get an average. I suppose you could get a rough one by just selecting the \"middle\" page of the minis you\'d voted on and seeing what scores you\'d given on that page or pages.
Technically, that would be your \"median\" vote:

The Median is the \'middle value\' in your list. When the totals of the list are odd, the median is the middle entry in the list after sorting the list into increasing order. When the totals of the list are even, the median is equal to the sum of the two middle (after sorting the list into increasing order) numbers divided by two.
- about.com

The median is a measure of central tendency which prevents a few extreme values from skewing your statistic to the point where it doesn\'t accurately describe the \"center\" of the data... oh god what a nerd.

well...

My comments...

Some of it, i think is due to people who Tony has...uhm...pissed off however, while the mini is superb (i truly think it is...i rated it a 9), look at some other dreadnoughts around.

Mainly, Hellblade by Vincent Hudon, and Grey Knight FW dread by Nano. IMHO those 2 are much better, and they are in the 9.6 to 9.7 range I think. Then, the dreadnought that won in UK a year or 2 back, the one that had a big smiley alien face, and all the slime/vines, etc...nurgle one. That I think is one of the best dread\'s I have seen and more original due to the massive mod on it than even hellblade or Nano\'s GK dread.

Tony\'s has style, but I wouldn\'t rate it better than those, so I would expect TOny\'s to be in a high 8 rating. Then, due to snipers, yes, it could fall below 8.

But let\'s put some stuff in perspective guys...we\'re here to learn, end of discussion. Someone wants to leave the site..guess what, they will be replaced and in time, a lot better painters will still be there for the rest of us to learn from. I say end such threads since it\'s getting old :)

Dammit:flame: It\'s people like you who keep my left talon from placing where it really should be.

[edit] whoops! posted this before I\'d read all the way down to see I\'d already been acknowledged.
And my apologies, as, looking back at the talon, I see you gave it a 1.
*Emily Litella voice* nevermind.

Well, if those votes where snips, then when the mini hit 50 votes, wouldn\'t they have been thrown out anyway??? And why take out all your minis over one sniped mini???

Oh well, no snot out of my nose... i mean, it does make me one place higher in the rankings:innocent:
(kidding you Tony, put your minis back up)

Cool! Another thread about the subjective nature of voting! I know alot of guys who think tabletop standard is baremetal glued on base.
BTW I didn\'t realize 10 was the high score I was giving the really good ones a \"1\" @#%$!

Well, it apears that Tony has removed all his gallery images
Yeah, I spotted that too on the day. Didn\'t want to highlight it though.

Yep, that\'s it. I don\'t think we have to include maliciously - that\'s sort of implied.

We shouldn\'t do this. I know it\'s tempting, I know it feels right, but just like with the opposite tendency it\'s not the way one should vote. And if you vote well above the current score the anti-sniping algorithm kicks in anyway and discounts it doesn\'t it?!

On some entries perhaps, but not overall. There are any number of very underrated minis on the site that won\'t recover from their sniping without just as concerted an effort as there was to drive the score down in the first place.

For that matter there are some overrated ones IMO that may have arrived at that point just as artificially. We all know this. The Chinese know that we know, but we make believe that we don\'t know...

Man, if this is any indication I\'m way tough! Actually I know I am, but still... I think I\'ve given out less than ten 10s (most of them to Yellow One :bouncy: ) Lemme go check just for the laugh.

Edit: okay five 10s for Yellow One (including my first 10 vote on the site) one for Shawn, one for fluffy, one for Alexi Z, one for Prophet.

Angry voice from the cloud of yellow smoke with smell of sulfure:
WHAT?!!! JUST FIVE 10s?!!! YOUR SOUL IS MY!!!
So, first what i see. Anonimous voting of thousand peoples have a pretension of fair validation of painter`s skill. Fair - is the main and sole trait. If this voting not fair it`s have not any price and meaning, empty place. This is technical problem - how to keep the voting fair. IMHO voting only by authorized members can help, not absolutely, but enough for bolting of anonimous malevolent voting from proxi servers. Hacking of the CMON database not easy for ordinary sniper, only for venerable;)
In any case, retreat from gallery is big wrong IMHO. This is exactly what your malefactor need. Tony, your retreat is his victory. Do you realy wanna do his dirty work? ;)
