My Harbinger

I know, I know.... she isn\'t based. As it says on the image page, I haven\'t figured out how to go about it, yet.

While my painting skills are still developing (very slowly), I\'m quite pleased with this effort.
I was intending to do some freehand work on her, but my hand isn\'t as steady as I want it to be, for such things.

I probably could have done a better job of shading/highlights, but I need her on the table on the coming weekend, too, which hindered my efforts at high quality (or at least as high as I think I can actually get it).

To give me the traditional \'5\' vote (or whatever you think it\'s worth), here\'s the linky-link...

For three viewing angles, including the one posted... here\'s badly taken photographs....

You get bonus points for even assembling that monstrosity. lol I can\'t think of a more complex PP model.

I like the metals, especially on the flag. They just look... I dunno... metallic next to all that solid white (which is wonderfully smooth.)

The jewelry chain is a cool idea, but I think the links are little big for the model. The skin and the red on the robes could have uses a little more light/dark. Overall, good tabletop mini, and better than any Harbinger I\'ve seen on the table.

Now go burn some heretics! :D

Not bad, this is the first time I have ever seen this sculpt and it rocks!

Good luck with the game on the weekend, and please come back and do more on this mini when you have got the time, its such a beautiful piece it would be a shame to see it only done to tabletop standard.

I\'ll definitely be returning to her to improve what is already done. I have a feeling that she\'s going to become a very lengthy WIP, where every few days, I do something else to her over the next few months.

This will probably include repairing things after games.

@hakoMike: The chains were actually chosen for being almost the same size as the ones sculpted. Look at the second picture\'s foremost priest at the bottom of his robes. *and ding me a point for not painting the real chain yet to match the steel of the motionless one... oops?*

See my assembly instructions in the Privateer Press section of our forum, too. :)

@OrkyDave: I fear that my best works to date are still only a \'high tabletop standard\'. But I\'ll try to do her justice. Promise.

it\'s a good start. for me, a little bit of shading on the robes could go a long way. nothing major but some grey/browny tinge to the recesses would give it more depth. also a thin black/dark brown wash would make the metallics pop a bit more, imo. looks like it was hell to put together - something like that would really scare me!!

It scared me, too, even though I\'d spent more than 24 hours just /planning/ where to do the pinning.

I\'ve come to the conclusion that this one is going to be my \'use in games\' one, and I\'m going to do a second Harbinger and really try to make her awesome for display purposes (and possibly sale).

I\'ll definitely remember to check back here for the comments again, when I do that, because I\'ll never remember them all, otherwise.

Thanks y\'all.

Well the white needs shade, it too flat, I shod work my way down in the shades using really thin gray/blue color. whit a combination of gray and blue you get a impression of a clean white. The read also need some more shades and maybe some extreme highlights as well.

Your metallic looks good especially on the banner. Its cool that is so bright, fits the model...

As for free hand I do them like this its quite simple to do, if you want simple ones.

1. After the primer I paint the base color (you never guest that did you... )

2. I paint the free hand on the base color, this is done quite ruff and it will look a bit messy. Remember to use thin paint. Then it will depend on the color of the free hand and the base color of the model. On my wraithlord I have a black base color, I painted the free hands on with white.
On the wyper I used black to when I painted it on the red base color.

3. Now I have a REALLY messy free hand on the model (it looks awful). In this step I start touching up the free hand. On the wraithlord I used black to cover the messy part of the white free hand and on the vyper I used white to cover the black. I try to get a smote shape of the free hand, its important to use thin paint (as always). I go over all my mistakes so I have a shape that I like. Now the free hand looks quite good. (on the vyper I will have some white around most part of the free hand because I have changed the shape that much)

4. Its time to fill the free hand with a color (dark angel green on the vyper and yellow on the wraitlord) I tried to get as little color as possible outside of the black or white free hand. After that I highlighted the free hand with brighter color (dark angel green + skull white or yellow and skull white on the wraitlord) I used two layers with slightly brighter color on the last one. I often miss the base free hand a little bit so I fix this, on a black area its really easy because you can just cover the messy parts with the your black base color. On the vyper I have to use white and then cover up the white with red.

5. Your free hand is finish! Now you just have to highlight the base color around the free hand. This is not as hard as you may think, but be careful so you don’t mess up the free hand...

As you might understand its more easy for me to paint a bright free hand on a dark base color. Its so much more easy to just cover your mistakes with the dark base color, IMO its the best way to start. Later you can try to paint dark free hands on bright base color but then you have to cover your mistakes with white because your bright base color will not cover the dark free hand

I really wish I had a camera so it was possibly for me to show a step by step, but this is the best I can do at the moment, feel free to ask questions if something is strange or not clear enough.

Hope this help some. :)

That is a very adventurous mini to tackle and you\'ve made a great start getting it to tabletop standard. As others have said, your next step needs to be shading it lots of washes to add depth and texture. I do think your metallics are looking good but perhaps a tad too clean (again the washes will solve this).

If you do decide to put another one together for more advanced painting, make sure you post your progress regularly in a WIP as the feedback and suggestions you\'ll get along the way will be a great help, as will the constant begging from us to see more ;)
