in fact, a bastard 12 mile walk up wale\'s 2nd largest mountain (just 100m shorter than snowdon), then up another, down the valley and around the base before climbing pen y fan again and then dying in the carpark

i was fairly well prepared but i had my thinner pair of socks on which meant that i took the skin off my little toe. apart from that, legs are aching a bit still but not too bad. anyhoo, here\'s some pics to show you the views:
bloody cold at the top. the big bit is the peak of pen y lan

Tim, Looks like you had a good day :D when did you do that little trip?

I went up on Sunday morning via the tourist route (breaking in a new pair boots) it was beautiful at 7 in the morning but nowhere near the amount of frost that you had, coming down it was like a motorway of people going up, even came across one group going up in their Sunday best...

Only took a couple of shots though :D

Views are fantastic but the routes from all directions are that badly erroded now they stick out like a motorway. Shame really it has deteriorated so much in the last 5 to 10 years despite the fact that they have put a stone path down as can be seen on both Tim and my own shots.

Ah pen-y-fan is a good hike

i used to do it every other weekend with my dad until he became to lazy to do it

i remember seeing like army people running up it and then there was a memorial service at the big pile of rocks

Aye Scott, your lady forced you to say that I bet :D

They are some beautiful pictures. I\'m thinking of riding from Cardiff to Brecon in late Spring or early Summer. It\'ll be nice to get out into the sticks again.

Some slight mistakes though chaps and ladies! Pen y Fan is the highest in South Wales, but not the second largest in Wales altogether. Cadair Idris is taller, as are about 5 or 6 peaks in Snowdonia. In fact, I think Pen y Fan falls something just below 3000ft whereas Snowdon/Eryri is about 3650 or 3560. I always get confused. However, that\'s just me being pernickety.

Time, I see you took the harder route that way! Straight up that face to the top rather than the horseshoe. Fair play!

Wiccanpony: I think it\'s too cold up there for iron-age forts and the like. Very exposed. No particular advantage in owning a freezing mountain :D. And monasteries in Wales were all in the fertile lowlands or some such. I can\'t think of any that aren\'t on a river in an open valley.

Lordy no! Rather be up there than in North Cornelly or Bridgend where she grew up - type \'North Cornelly\' into Google images for a laugh!!

All this hoo-ha about those kids topping themselves in Bridgend. Bloody hell, did they ever stop to look at the place??! It rivals Bradford in the grimness stakes!!

Scott: Fair play, it\'s not the nicest part of Wales in the township stakes, but as soon as you are out of the town the place is quite nice. I agree about Bridgend being a shithole though. Rough as arseholes :D

Tim: I\'m just a nerd. I made the same mistake a while ago and I was told quite plainly that Pen y Fan - whilst being a lovely place and a good climb - is smaller by a good fistful than several other places. I felt quite humbled :(

Wow FinaC, great pics! Looks like a truely beautiful view, hope you\'ve recovered from the hike.

Reminds me of Crough Patrick on the west coast of Ireland.

cheers,
Grumb

I\'v been down in London and did 22 miles around the river yesterday. Wish I had been out in the hills though lol

Urban hiking just isn\'t as good.
