My next big project

Well its that time again and I need to build a new army. I have finally put my Ogres to rest (5 tournaments and 5 best painted armies). I had a lot of people complain about my army that it was too hard to beat it in the painting comp. My advice to them was to paint better than me and they could win. I dont mean to sound conciepted but compition is what has pushed me to the level I am today. If I had no compition I would still be churning out the same minis I did 10 years ago.

Anyway my next army is inspired by the 300 movie (yes I know its been and gone already) and also by someone else on this site, cant remember who but thanks for the idea, I present my first few minis.

This guy represents a Hero on a horse. I will rebase this guy depending on the army I choose.

This Guy is the unit Champion

Couple of rank and file

As you can probably see they are made from:
5th edition Bret archers for the bottoms.(I have maybe 50 of them)
Beastmen Chest for Breastplate arms and spears. The hair has been removed.
Maruader helmets moded for heads. The crests are from an Aussie company called shadow forge. They make some great minis but they are all girls and there will be NO girls in this army. (That will be a change for me).

I will post some more pics when I get some that are in focus.

A couple of things that I am struggling with at the moment are.
What army to use. I did up a HE list and played a few games and they are too soft as an infantry army. Empire is way too many figures I came close to 300 figures and I dont want to convert and paint that many minis. Anyway I will play around with list for a while till I find the right one. It maybe WE.

Basing. I want to do something different with the bases. I was thinking of tiles floors with mosiacs when all the minis are put together with corinthian pillar on the movement trays. Im willing to take advice on this one as I am not 100% sold on this idea but I want something else besides the painted sand bases.

I have in mind a few things for this project but Im not sure whether to go historical or Mythical. If I go mythical I can have centuars and Satires and harpies in the army. Anyway that will have to wait till I get a bit further along.

So far I am going to make 3 units of foot and two units of light cav as well as a few units (small) of archers. The unit of spears I intend to be 6 wide and 4 deep and build my army aroud that.

So if you have any ideas let me know. Hope I havent bored you yet.

WOW
very cool stuff
im ashamed to say that now i want a 300 inspired model. as for the army (im not a player i just paint and convert so correct me if im wrong) what about doing it as a DOW army. weh maybe not. a VC army then you could get a s.......ummm s something vampire (the really ugly ones) to represent the hunchback.meh the VC has to many skellies i guess
the basing idea sounds great a little uncommon ground for the WE lol
oh well looks great good luck

Maybe VC never thought of that. Dont care about the race fluff as the army will be Spartan and I will give it its own fluff.

Heres the front rank of the spear unit.

Dang your quick.
looks like the front left guy is missing the point (of the spear):D and some hair
very nice BSB.
maybe the strigo (?) vampire body will work for the hunchback. ithink thats the name
again dunno which way your going.
Oh Hey may they could use those big guys as rules ...uhhhhmmm what are they called
oh yeah Ogres lollol sorry couldnt help it.

from what I know of warhammer armies chaos mmight work no ?
Lots of infantry, mutations are part of the rules so you could include the hunchback. the oracles could make nice sorcers.

that\'s what I thought aswell :)

looks good, I must say though that I don\'t really like the concept for a warhammer army, but eh, it looks real cool :D

nice idea with the beastmen torsos for breast plates :)

Fantastic idea, and superb conversions!!!

If the 2 choices are historic or mythical, I personally would definatley go mythical. Historic would just be rank upon rank of troops and boring to play, let alone paint. Mythical you could use a chaos list, with the \'spartans\' as maruders or chaos warriors, minotaurs, cenotaurs etc.

I know you\'re not exactly shooting for total accuracy, but the sword on the first mini is about twice the size it should be. The yataghan, on which this sword is modeled, is short to medium length, and the one in the picture is clearly too long and broad to be either. kudos on the rest.

Given you\'re doing pretty much the \"300\" Spartans, go for mythical.
Vampire Counts: Wouldn\'t do. Sure, they incite fear or worse, but they are utter crap stat-wise (unless you deploy those guys as Wights and do some other Greeks as \"Skellies\" or \"Zombies\". But then they shouldn\'t inspire fear...). No, definitely not Vampires.

Dogs of War: Might work, with the Spartans as Pikemen (nothing like 4 fighting ranks when defending) and the other Greek polioi as support (cavalry etc.). Would work great, but I\'m not up do date on DoW point values, which might give you lots of minis needed again.

Chaos: Sound. What Frenchkid said.

High Elves: Good skills, but too soft. True, they can fight from three ranks, but DoW are better that way.

If you\'re really creative, you could adapt Lizardmen rules... I\'m not so firm on those, so I don\'t know if they would work. Cold-blooded (all Ld tests on 3d6, keep the 2 lowest) sounds sweet for Spartans, though.

What the heck, surprise us! I\'m sure you won\'t let us down ;)

Yep I know its way too big. Seemed when I measured ans converted the exchange rate got mixed up.

You might be on to somethin GLBH. Never thought of lizzies but they sure are tough little beggers. I will run up a list and see what I can come up with. TA.
