Hey guys, I finally got my miniatures back from the store so was able to take some better shots of the Mordor Troll that won me Gold in the lotr large category.

I had a crapload of issues with the gw water effects when I did him. I wanted a more realistic look than I ended up with. I had to paint the water on 5 minutes before my friend arrived to take me to GW to hand the miniatures over, so it was a little rushed in the end but maybe it worked in my favour lol

Hope you like him :)

Very, very nice. The water effects look ok to me (but, hey, what do I know?) and the armor looks great. Voted.

Congrats on the gold!

Heh, yeah but you didn\'t see it before I fixed it lol
Thats not water effects, that\'s paint with a bit of gloss varnish over the top. :)

Haha cheers Dragonsreach and Trevor :)

Sod the water effects, that armour is fantastic! And the cloth and the skin etc!

This certainly is one pic I will be referencing when I get and paint the new troll chieftan. Love it, fantastic job!

I am currently using GW water effects for the first time and hate it.:( Although in hindsight a 5\'\' x 3\'\' cube about an inch deep with a ltd edition forgeworld slann in it probably isn\'t the best project to test it with!!!)

Nice work. Love the skin tone and armour. Cant really see why people would waste money on the GW stuff when white glue will do the same job but whatever floats your boat. Overall real nice mini congrats on your win, love your work.

I love the skin tones on him! I want to paint the new Arnor troll for a competition, could you tell me how you painted skin? :)

Oh gosh Arna, that\'s the single worst question you could have asked lol

I used a lot of vallejo flesh colours iirc. There were heaps of washes involved because I had trouble getting the look I wanted to achieve.

I\'m pretty sure I started with the usual mix of Tan + Khaki + tiny bit of Scorched Brown, then I think I washed on quite a lot of watered down Tan + Brown so it would get in the niches of his skin. I think I then highlighted with the original mix to clean it up, then with the original mix that had been lightened a little with some white.

It didn\'t look how I wanted though. I recall doing a mish-mash of highlights in bleached bone and dead flesh (that rotting flesh pale green colour).

Also I think throughout the highlighting stage I also used some inks to make very watered down purple and dirty green mixes to use in the deeper recesses and around the warty bits on his legs n stuff.

The best advice I can give you is to not be too neat. I did a pretty messy job on the skin. I mean it doesn\'t look messy, but there are a lot of colours in there and I wasn\'t pedantic about where I put them or how neatly I lay them down. There were a lot of streaky brush strokes.

Sorry I can\'t be more specific, the skin was really hard and I kinda fluked it to be honest. ???

no no, I think the key to that kinda skin is washes and not trying to be too clean! He is a troll after all ^^

I\'ll give it a shot on the new troll when I get it in Feb!
