My painting ability....returns!!!

It\'s been a sad old UK Golden Demon campaign for me this year. I\'ve been trying to muster the enthusiasm but it\'s been hard. What with sculpting and painting being my job and all.

Finally got an entry to the undercoat stage the other day and started painting it. AAARRGGHHH! I\'ve completely lost the ability to paint. It\'s worth noting that, other than Spyglass minis and the odd quick paintjob, I\'ve not done a proper paintjob since last year\'s demons. Spyglass stuff barely counts as I sculpt that stuff to be ideal for me to paint (perk of the job).

But my painting on GW stuff at demon level was sucking. Badly. Appointment for my little pewter friend with the dunk tank of paint thinners. And a boat load of depressive thoughts like \'do I bother with Golden Demon this year?\'.

Well, I gave it another shot tonight. I dumped out all the fancy new techniques I\'ve been experimenting with over the last few months and got right back to basics. Black undercoat, GW paints and good old layering....

Monster! :D

There it is, feeling much better now and I\'ve got a demon entry half done. Not a big one but it\'s going to be nice to have one entry done and dusted.

Now, you\'re wondering why I\'m posting this? \'Who cares?\' I hear you cry. Well, I just felt the urge to share.

My painting is officially firing on all cylinders again. See all you who are descending upon Birmingham in October.

Finally I am looking forward to it (for more than just the exodus to the pub) :cool:

I bet your crappy paint job looked better than most of us could do in a month!!

I think you should post a piccie of a crappie mini of yours so we can see what it was like when you painted badly (if ever).

Okay, in reality the fig wasn\'t, like, terrible. Hell, it\'d look good gracing most gaming tables and would probably have made the first cut at the demons.

Just that I don\'t play the game for the first cut anymore. I\'ve got nine demon awards in my cabinet so I really need to feel that any entry that I\'m going to devote my spare time to (and there aint that much of it) has a shot at winning a trophy or a shot at taking that final step to get the sword.

I don\'t think this one has a shot at the sword even now but a trophy isn\'t impossible. The fig first time around really would have required the category to be appallingly low quality by competition standards to allow me to win a demon with it.

Now I reckon it\'s paintjob is a similar or better standard to the figs I\'ve done that have won demons.

If it doesn\'t win I can handle it and wont sulk, I just need to know in my heart that it\'s good by my own standards. And the first paintjob wasn\'t.

Well, like they say: use it or loose it.. I myself have yet to get started on my Shanys, and may never get to it what with school now.. (ARRGH!! The dreaded school!!) And I want to enter the LA GD next year!! I guess I\'ll have to put some time aside from studying a bit, because it\'s already too exhausting.. Good to know some of us can sproing right back into action! :p

I hear ya! It\'s pretty weird that your hang of it goes away after a period of no painting. I\'m what i call an \'in the mood\' painter and so don\'t paint very often. Every time i do paint i need to get back into it first!:(

Edit: bad spelling.

The hardest part of painting for me is finding the motivation to do it. Not to imply that I\'m a awesome painter mind you. I don\'t especially enjoy the process a lot of the times. I just like the end result.

Don\'t disbelieve, happens all the time. Right pain I can tell you. Normally happens at the most awkward moment (like close to demons time).

And Sturm, I might be hiding behind the fridge. By the way, there\'s some old minis back here. Plus a very mouldy piece of bacon and a comb for some reason :D

Can\'t wait to see it......! \'Painter\'s block\' is a nightmare. I just can\'t seem to motivate myself to paint at the mo. It comes in fits and starts - I\'ll paint for three days solid and then do nothing for weeks sometimes. Too many distractions.....:D

its like riding a bike....

I think painting is alot like riding a bike. Its easy to pick up and remember the basics, but if you want to pull off some of the fancy tricks, like riding no handed, doing wheelies, you\'d have to be riding every day for a while...

I tried to paint up an entry in time for GD Canada and didn\'t get it done in time (too many deadlines). So I\'m trying to get it done for the UK GD but... well, it\'s kind of difficult to be bothered. I wish there were more smaller competitions where I might actually have a chance of winning anything - it\'s either GD or Salute at the moment.

I hope I make the first cut. I suppose that\'s areasonable goal. But I haven\'t managed that for, like six years or something...

I would first just like to point out how absolutely unfair it is, Steve, that you can do such excellent sculpts AND such beautiful paint jobs. :D
That said, glad to hear you\'re \"back in the saddle\" with your Demon quality painting. Your own standards are always the hardest to live up to.

Good on ya Steve- welcome back

:D Hey good to see you push past that feeling. Procrastination is my worst enemy. Picking up new techniques is tough and cause some problems too if it ain\'t going well. Glad you respect us all enough to share. You\'d be surprized how many folks feel the same way as you do.

In fact, I am taking the next week off from my day gig and painting and building is all that I plan to do.:D
