Napoleon

Hello everyone! I have been in a painting rut for quite some time now and I\'m hoping to pull myself out with this bad boy. When Tom Meier posted pictures of this:

on his blog over a year ago, I was so depressed because I thought it was meant for some big game company and we\'d never see it again. Thankfully he just released it along with the others in the line a few days ago. I\'m doing this thread just to make sure I keep the progress going and it doesn\'t wind up in the 1/3-finished pile.

I really need to work on my lighting and photography situation so I\'m planning on going to Hobby Lobby tomorrow but for now bear with these pictures. With one light right now, the picture is either too dark or the light has a bad glare and you can\'t see what the paint actually looks like. After many tries, I got this one.

Comments and especially constructive criticism welcome! (the pants are just having the basecoat worked on so I do realize it looks bad now)

It\'s probably a reaction to where that rod\'s been stuck lol

Love the cast - it looks a lot of fun to paint and you\'ve made a really great job of it so far, especially the face. Just noticed how much the sculpt reminds me of Brain (from Pinky and the Brain)

*NARF!*

It does, it also looks like he needs a change,,,

Loving the way it\'s going though, nice and clean! Can\'t wait to see how you get on with the horse :)

ED: lol he\'s throwing the horns with his right hand! ROCK ON NAPOLEON! Must be after his Bill and Ted days...

Is it me or does that figure look somewhat mis-shapen?
It seems to mee as if there\'s too much body.

Welcome back James!

Good to see you haven\'t completely forsaken us.

The face is looking stellar, and I really like the whole model (caricature and all) quite a bit.

Why does Napoleon always have his hand inside his waistcoat though? Is he hiding M&M\'s in there?

I think Vikeys right actually... He was always a tight ase that Napoleon! Would he share with the army? Would he hell!

Probably why he was so grouchy half the time, no one can eat M&M\'s the right way without spilling a few...

I spent a good many hours this past week working on this guy, which is encouraging because I normally get bored by this point. I\'ve probably spent 4 hours or more on the cloak so far and I\'m still not satisfied. It just seems a little boring and plain even though there looks to me like there is a decent amount of contrast. Any suggestions? I thought about doing some weathering and \'wear and tear\' but would that be unfitting for Napoleon as an emperor (unless it was the nightmarish return from Russia, but then I\'d have to do snow and I just don\'t think that\'s what this miniature was sculpted to be)?

The gold metals were really difficult, I could barely seem to keep the brush on the raised \'1\' without it sliding down the side and defeating the contrast. The \'#\' was phenominally difficult too, I basically just had to drybrush it and miraculously no light paint got in the center. It just seemed much harder than I thought it would be considering I don\'t have as much trouble painting pupils on 28mm minis. Also, they\'re not yellow enough so I\'ll probably do some thin glazes of golden yellow or something.

Camel-toe/moose-knuckle and a rod up his anus, he\'s not a happy camper:D

Here\'s another shot of what I did today. I\'m pretty excited, his pants just weren\'t building up highlights after many coats of white primer so I thought they were bound to turn into a let-down part of the miniature or a nightmare. I just couldn\'t get an even, non-chalky white and then this GUY inspired me. It looked like it had a flesh tone in the white so I mixed bronzed flesh, VMC intermediate grey and white and it came out as a rotting flesh color that proved quite effective at getting even coverage.

I\'m still not sure what to do with the coat, any good opinions?

Do you have a lot of the P3 colors? I remember when they came out thinking they sounded good. PP said something about them taking their time and making sure the paints were superior to GW, Vallejo, Rackham, etc, since it would be dumb to introduce the same old thing into an already competitive market. Then again, of course they\'d say that so I suppose that\'s why I haven\'t tried them out. Is there any good place to buy a few colors without having to pay $8+ shipping?
