So, I've been out of the hobby for about 3 years or so. Ever since I went to college, I haven't really had time to paint anything. However, I have decided that that is going to change. I'm still in college, (entering senior year) but this summer I will have a lot of free time on my weekends while I work an internship on weekdays. A friend of mine and I want to get back into playing 40k, but before I buy anything new I have to finish at least some of the massive amounts of models I already have. First up, a Chaos Battalion that I got discounted when my local GW closed (only $60!) I have some other chaos models as well that didnt come with the Battalion. I've forgotten almost everything about painting minis, so I'm basically starting fresh (though I'm sure a lot of it will come back to me) because of this, I'm going to be painting these chaos models at a very basic tabletop quality, just to get back into it. I've finished one Warrior and one mounted Marauder so far:

As you can see, I've painted both of these in the same color scheme. (And again, I'm painting these to a very basic tabletop standard) I'll definitely be painting their units the same, but maybe not the whole battalion. Any critique on the scheme? I'm calling them done, but I'd still be open to suggestions.

Anyways, I'm going to get as far as I can with these chaos guys, (maybe the whole battalion? I might end up selling some) I also have a lot of eldar, and some ork stormboyz. If I can justify it at some point, I'd like to make a Chaos Space Marine army, (either unaligned or Slaanesh) but for 40K purposes I still have my fully painted Raven Guard.

I think I'm going to need to get some new paints; a lot of mine are old and crusty. Now that I've been through 3 years of art school I'm hoping that my knowledge will be helpful when painting minis (color theory, paint mixing, freehand)

My paint desk is all cluttered and dusty from disuse, but when I clean it up it'll be good. I'm moving back to Providence in a week, so hopefully setting up a new clean painting station in my apartment will be good motivation. Anyways, more to come in the next few days, but please give me some critique on what I've finished and maybe some tips on how to get back into the hobby.

Thanks!

A bit more progress today, started painting a banner to practice blending again (went...ok?) and did the basecoat for another marauder horseman. I also have all the Marauders and a unit of Chaos Knights assembled, ready to paint. I came across the mounted chaos lord in one of my boxes, this one:

So I think I might work up to this and see if I can do a really good paint job on it after I finish the marauders and the knights. Anyways, more pictures tomorrow once I've made a bit more progress.

Keep up the good work, will be nice too see where you go with the mounted chaos lord when you try out to do a good paint job. Will add your thread too try to give some advice when I have time.

Thanks, I made a cool base for the Chaos Lord a while ago, so I want to try to paint it to match.

Anyways, More work on the marauder horsemen today. They are all basecoated and washed. They're all at about this level:

Now that the tedious part is over I'm really looking forward to getting into the detail. Also, I'm starting to notice just how wonky the anatomy on these models is.

I posted in the trading post section, but I figure I'll post here since more people will see it. If anyone is interested, I would trade a lot of these Fantasy Chaos models (unbuilt/painted) for Chaos Space marine models, preferably unbuilt/painted and of the newer variety.

That horseman looks fabulous, I will come here for inspiration, really like the beard part. Need to learn how to do it so crisp and nice myself one day.

Thanks! One thing thats helped is that I've forgone all my old GW brushes. I've been using a Utrecht mixed synthetic brush for everything, and I like it a lot more. The bristles are longer so its harder to get paint stuck in the ferrule. Its also far springier than any GW brush I used to use, so it holds its point very well.

I found an old Chaos Space Marine terminator lord yesterday that I'm going to strip the paint off of today. It might be too much to resist painting that before I get to the Chaos Knights or the other Chaos lord. I'm thinking of painting it in Alpha Legion colors, perhaps similar to the one that Zab has in his gallery.

Can't update for a little while. Moving into my new apartment tomorrow, and starting an internship on Monday. Hopefully I'll be able to post some progress next weekend! I'm going to make a DIY lightbox so I can get some better pictures.

Sorry for the infrequent updates, I only have time to work on weekends now. Here he is with a base:

And heres a Chaos Terminator Lord that I just started. I'm painting him in Alpha Legion colors as I hope to put together an Alpha Legion army at some point. I'm using glazes over metallic paint like Zabs Aspiring Champion. (Zab, if you're reading, cool model!)

Also, its not miniature related, but in addition to painting models I've started doing a small 30 minute oil study every Saturday and Sunday. If you're interested check them out at cspillustration.tumblr.com

Thanks! That one was such fluke but sometimes luck does play a huge part in this hobby ;) I really like the dark muted tones of your chaos stuff!

Thank you! I've been wanting to collect an Alpha Legion army for a while, and when I saw your Aspiring Champion I decided to try out the scheme. I'm testing a quick way to do it though as I'm planning on painting a whole army. I bought some green ink from Liquitex to use as a wash (cause I get more of it for less that GW washes or the like) and it seems to be working well.

Ah, well the minitaire ghost tints from badger would probably let you do it by airbrush, but then you would still have to go back and do all the details with bristles anyway. You are getting nice results with the liquitex though :)

Soo... As you all may or may not have noticed, I ended up not really having any time to continue work over the summer. I am still determined to get back to painting at the level I was at before I took my hiatus though, so I will still be updating this from time to time! I worked a bit more on the Chaos Lord, but I don't think I'll be posting it until its finished. I also found a unit of possessed Chaos Space Marines that I just stripped, and will build and paint when I get around to them.
