Necrons

What are everyone\'s thoughts on the new Necrons? I personally love the new models, especiallly the green rod things in the guns. I thought the rods would look really tacky next to a normal paint job but from the pictures I\'ve seen, they look really good. The only problem with the new range is the Flayed ones, these models are truly hideous and do not look right next to the rest of the new range. Both C\'Tan models are great though, and even if I don\'t collect Necrons, I may buy these any way, just to paint.

I\'m still not sure about the necrons. the concept of robotic skeletons (a la Terminator), is one of the weakest design decision of GW, IMHO.

Just seen the Tomb Spyder model, looks pretty good, but could benefit from a more interesting paint job than just metal. Reminds me of that robot thing in The Matrix that pulls all the cables out of Neo

I must agree with Errex, the Necrons do appear to be a weak concept.

After all the concept had been used by Legions of Steel and Shockforce before there were Necrons.

I kind of feel like it is GW grasping at straws.

They\'re ace!

I think the new range is great - much better now the models are less boxy and the range is bigger.
And they are a dream to paint.

The Flayed ones deserve more justice than the photos give them - they are amongst my faves in the range. Wait \'till you\'ve had the chance to play with them.

On the concept thing, Games Workshop are making a race of humanoid robot warriors, who have effectively been awaken from \'death\' after millenia, I can\'t think of any better concept apart from the skeletal thing. And, gotta love that Lord.:)

The Game \"Legions of Steal\" already used a similar concept.

I must say many of the models produced by global games were of better quality and more imaginative than the GW stuff currently being produced.

In \"Legions of Steal\" they were also an Alien Race of machines that used humans and what ever they got their hands on to continue. Also were of indeterminable age and lived only to destroy and recycle the bodies of their victims.

What I am getting at is that GW is grasping at the ideas of other companies and using them in their games.

The Tau are another example of this, take Starcraft Protoss and cross it with almost any Japanese Robot Anime and whamo you have the Tau.

Saw the New Necrons in the flesh (!) at the January Open day at GW Lenton. The New Destroyer I have also seen painted up in extrremely dark red, a version looking like the stonework of STARGATE, and a brilliantly painted black to green fade. (The last two were GW store staff).
As to the concept the original game predecessor to Space Hulk (can\'t remember the name) had cyborgs just like the Necrons. One of my constant opponents still has some of them and has used them as Necrons. But I agree the concept in not new and I vaguly remember soem mini\'s in the 70\'s after Star Wars first came out which used \"Robotic\" warriors.

???????????

Dear Figflog, why do you consider new Necrons a \"dream to paint\"??Maybe they\'ll be faster to paint.....do you consider a brush as an artwork????I\'ll wait for new futuristic Rackam minis....they\'ll probably see the light from an year or two.......i\'ll wait.....???

Actually the game was Space Crusade. The original Space Hulk was a Genestealer Vs marine Game. And yes that is where some folks claim the First Necrons came from. However if you own the game or have seen the models in question you would know right away that this is a Chaos Robot just as the directions said.

My only point is that, hey the models are OK and the concept is not new or refreshing.

I would say, if a concept works, go with it. The popularity of Japanese Anime films obviously did inspire the Tau, but since this was a good concept, it made the range a good one. All I\'m saying is that although GW has showed little imagination in inspiration for the Necrons, since the theme they have borrowed from is a good one, why knock it???

Interesting, I used to hear people saying that the Protoss were a rip-off of GW\'s Eldar! The Tau do look a lot like Protoss though, certainly.

Barrow the concept of the Eldar, Squats, or even out of print Zoats, and find out how fast the idea is jumped on by GW lawyers.

GW Sued DemonBlade Games for the use of the Orgs designs in their system, designs that Grenadier had already been using (and producing under the title \"Space Orcs\"). DemonBlade purchased them.

At that time DemonBlade had the DeadTech as a faction in their ShockForce Game, and promptly GW developed the Necrons after the Lawsuit.

BTW DemonBlade settled out of court, in an attempt to not be bankrupted by a long legal fight.

So barrowing an idea and calling it your own is as bad as stealing it. Don\'t believe me just try it with GW and watch what happens.

Been paintin\' \'em!

Hi inzivro

Because I\'ve been painting them for a while now, and they are simple, yet very versatile models. I\'ve really enjoyed working on them!

You can get away with a simple drybrush of silver, but they are the sort of model that will take a while to master...

Watch out for some of the stuff yet to come...

Robot Warriors

Everyone has been ripping off the idea of robot warriors since the introduction of robots. Who cares? Every gaming system should have robot warriors like the necrons. And why try be original about it when it has already been perfected. And the necron idea is not new. Just remember that every one deserves necrons. Just be mindless about it and pretend its the best thing since sliced bread.

I think the models are just great. And think about how good they would like painted in NMM!!! I don\'t like the part when they say Necrons are older than Eldar though :p

The Wraiths, Immortals, and Destroyers aren\'t to my liking. The original sketches of the Destroyer was MUCH better than the model they came out with. The Immortals just aren\'t as menacing as they used to look. And I just want to push over a Wraith... the skinny little snake body and huge torso looks dumb.

But that\'s just me.

The rest of the models look good though. The Pariahs and C\'Tan are simply mind blowingly well done.

Some points everyone seems to lose track of:
-40K started out as \"Science Fantasy\" (GW\'s description, not mine) and was a fresh and original concept. Space Undead fit right into that concept.
-GW builds in elements from the entire pop cultural fantasy and sci-fi genres. Their market is global, and their stock and trade are archetypes. To appeal to a broad market, you need a broad concept. All their recent work is understandable from a marketing point of view.
