Hey all, i'm needing some advice on how to best achieve the color scheme on this primate. Mainly looking at his goatee.

This is the effect i've been trying to do on my PrivateerPress Gnarlhorn satry's furry parts, without much success. I found this pic this morning which is perfect for what i have visualized in my mind. Nice color shift, giving a good contrast... i'm not just quite sure how to achieve it. Again.. mostly just looking at the goatee

Any thoughts?

Hey there, to me it looks like your best bet would be to get a solid base coat down of something like bleached bone and then start using some thin glazes of something like bestial brown followed by darkflesh. I'm not sure what sort of colors you'll want from P3 but theres lots of comparison charts out there to help you find something similar to the GW colors I've stated made by P3.

For your glazes I'd use anywere between 8 and 15 parts water to 1 part paint. Coat on thin lairs over your base coat, slowly working your way from light to dark. Few coats near were you want to maintain the light color, more as you get towards were you'd like it to be dark. The coats won't be very noticable at first but will begin to show up more and more as you lair them on so have patience, hopefully this is of some help :D

Automaton has an incredible artical were he goes over how to use glazes. It can be found in the article section and I think falls under a heading something along the lines of "the painting of urmuth", its a really incredible article and well worth reading.

Hey guys, finally got some time to work on this tonight, but i'm stumped on trying to get a match on the VMC Red Leather.. I thought it would be pretty easy to match it with my VGC paints, but using the color conversion charts i have, none of them have a match. I'm thinking i could mix VGC Tan with maybe some VGC Terracotta and or scorched brown.. but i'm not quite sure. I suppose i should just hit the palette and start mixing..

Any suggestions?

Yes! Often the best way to do something is the way you'd do it, given all the variables. Plus the experimentation can be a very valuable learning experience.

I don't know the exact colour of Red Leather, but if it's a sort of terracotta colour you could mix this easily starting with red and a bit of yellow, then dulling it down with a dot of green or dark brown.
This ^ is the kind of thing I learned by experimenting, trying different things :glasses-nerdy:

What I ended up with was:
Vgc terracotta + tiny bit of parasite brown + scorched brown. This got me reall close to the color swatches I found and it looked right for the effect's basecoat.

I got most of the furry parts done. The small areas turned out pretty well, but I'm not too excited with how the leg patches and mohawk turned out. Had a harder time with the large areas for some reason and ended up with what looked like 10 minutes of drybrusing. I think I might hit these spots with another wash and try rehighlighting back up. I think what's getting me is the bright parts are opposite of where the lightsource highlights would be. I keep habitually putting them in the wrong spots heh.

Ill try to get some pics up for critique/comments.
