Well, I was thinking of a couple of feet after its been pulled from the braid - I use the same wire for both 25mm bowstrings and 54mm headset wires for military vehicle crews.

bowstring

if you can get a small enough drill bit (model train supply stores usually have it) try drilling through the bow and string the thread through it. glue one side in and let it dry, then pull tight, glue, then snip the other. should work with just about anything.

Ok, so I went home last night and actually looked at what I\'m using for bowstring. I\'m using the inner strands from a piece of sheilded cable that I found in a memorable dumpster dive behind a electronics part shop.

As an aside, I was stripping some of it last night and managed to make a sacrifice to the blood gods of mini painting, by jamming little thin wires into my thumb.

Yeah, that\'s gotta hurt. But it really hurts when you stab them little thin wires underneath your fingernail.

Sacrifices must be made!lol

The only model bow I have ever strung was on the old large scale Samurai from Ray Lamb - anyone remember?

For this I imitated the way a bow would be tensioned - ie by the bow and not by the string!

I think I used black embroidery silk for the string and braided it to a suitable length while keeping a loop at one end.
Once I had the correct length (by continually checking on the model) I tied another loop at the other end using a contrasting thread and cut of any excess. I also stiffened the thread with either glue or wax (don\'t remember which).
The detail on the bow was exceptional and allowed the string to be put in place and glued. All that was then needed was to pull the horns of the bow forward to create the tension.

You can achieve a similar result with fine wire if you get a suitable length and before gluing it in place you pull the horns of the bow back slightly. Once the glue has set you reverse this to creat the tension.

Simple :D;)

BTW - Another source of very fine wire is from a model electric motor\'s armature . One cheap motor will give you miles.

I was going to strip the motor from an old fan, but the GF put her foot down on having that much \"old useless crap\" lying about the apartment - oh well, I go about 6 foot of wire - at current expenditure rate that will last my children into the next century. :D

ow steelcult.... that musta hurt.....
personally wires under the fingernail is something that I shudder over and try to avoic.......

but if the wires all come from some motor part....erm, wont they kinda rust quicky..... especially if you live near the sea?

you know ur idea fur stringing a bow sounds interesting I never thot of braiding embroidery thread. Perhaps can take a crocheting needle and do a simple braid with a loop at one end for stringing bows..... :)

1. The wires are copper

2. Keep in mind that the samurai is a very large scale figure - from memory (I\'m at work) he is about 140mm high so using actual cord is a possibility - I know my eyes wouldn\'t let me braid silk for a 28mm figure - perhaps we need a smiley with glasses

Oh we have one:cool:- too cool!
