Hey Guys

I Have been painting about a year and im not happy with anything ive done because when i look how the pros paint they have all the highglighting shading and blending on their models.

Im just wondering if any one can help me with a couple of tips or good sites you have found.

Cheers

Biggest tip is to thin your paint with water.
Check out the articles here. Some are good for basic layering etc.Take a pic and post it here or in the work in progress thread for some direct feedback on your own stuff.

Your quesion is a little broad, don\'t you think? ;)

I think the best thing would be to show us a picture of one of your minis so we can critique it. As for highlighting and shading, it\'s simply painting the parts darker where shadow would fall and painting parts that would be hit by light lighter.... ;) That\'s pretty much all there is to it.

Yeah its broad but still hopefully people will post sites and things to help me aswell.

Highlighting is easy but perfecting the skill is muchh harder then actually doing it so im looking for different ways of approaching it and stuff.

Shading is pretty much the same while blending i have never tried and posibly wont attempt ti try fo a while because i have found no useful information about it.

Thanks for the advice still:duh:

You might not want to spend any money, but here is a link to a book sold by Games Workshop (dodges rotten fruit being thrown:D).

Link:
Games Workshop Painting Guide

Pretty good book, although I\'m sure there are some GW haters here who would disagree. If you really want to get better, I would recommend it. It starts with the basics and goes to the fairly advanced. It doesn\'t have NMM, OSL, or SENMM, but it has lots of pictures that you can follow and to motivate you. It also has a bunch of step-by-step guides to follow. Or, you could buy this new guide that hasn\'t been released yet, but a bunch of us here at
CMON are waiting for the copies we have preordered. Here\'s the link:

No rotten fruit

As James said, GW\'s \"How to paint Citadel miniatures\" is a good one. It\'s beginner to intermediate, and has excellent descriptions of all the standard techniques. It definitely lacks in the more advanced topics like painting crystal and gems (though there are a good few pics of Tammy Haye\'s Eldar), NMM and other such things. Also, it lacks blending technique coverage, its only concession being feathering.

For the improvement that that book alone can make, it\'s well worth its price. Given the scope and target market of the book, it gets a 9 out of 10 from me.

I agree with all the above. Pretty much read anything you can afford to get your hands on. I used to thumb through White Dwarf mags back in the day when I was working at a game store, and that helped on a bunch of the basics. Try different things, use what works for you, and adapt other things to your painting style.

I\'d say post stuff so we know where you\'re at, but it\'s already been mentioned. That and I\'d be a frigging hypocrite since I\'ve never posted anything I\'ve ever done. Still getting the hang of the camera. :D

For your sig, go into the User Control Panel and go to Edit Profile, I think. Should be somewhere in there.

And I think you can\'t change your avatar except from the actual CMON page, not the forum page. Could be wrong though. I\'m wrong a lot. ;)

You can scan your miniatures - lots of people do it for this site. I wouldn\'t know the details on how to get decent pictures out of it, but I\'m sure someone will be able to tell you how.
