Need help converting Leman Russ and Hellhound

Good morning folks. I am in the middle of building a Confederate Guard Army. Of course the theme is a Civil War flavor. The uniforms are two tone gray. The Lascannons and Autocannon are mounted on fantasy empire cannon carriages. All officers to include platoon leaders are on horse back. Oh and let us not forget my rough riders! I am using Cadian torso on fantasy pistoleers legs and horses lead by none other than Nathan Bedford Forrest. At the moment it really looks like a confederate army for the most part.

Now for the hard part. The problem I have is getting vehicles into this theme reasonably. I will use a minimum of 2 Leman Russes and one Hellhound. I have decided to make any vehicles look as old rusted steampunk stuff. I already have the color issue resolved. It has already been suggested to me to just stick a bunch of gears, cogs, and pipes around the vehicle. I don\'t want it to just look like a Leman or Hellhound with a bunch of junk glued to the sides.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Hey mate, sounds like you are building the perfect counterpart to my Wild West/Steampunk themed Orks.^^

As a source for ideas considering steampunk tech I find the Gurps Steampunk book quiet handy.
There they have some nice pictures of steampowered vehicle and even and clockworck tank.
Maybee you want to take a closer look at pictures of old steamengines and take a closer look at their drivetrains.

On a vighting vehicle I think that many exposed cog wheels aren´t very logical, because you definetly don´t want vital parts of machinery beeing exposed.
You could do some conversion of the vehicle´s backs exposing boilers, pistons cog wheels and various brass and copper tubing.

Good luck!!!

looking at the store images of them i am not sure where the access points are.

as an idea would it be possible to trmove the tracks outer portion and include your gears and sure inside it?

having a steam engine smokestack somewhere might also fit into the deisgn.

i could see them working as tracked steam locomotives. but unlike a locomotive i am unsure how the track would stay on and be turned with the gears since the long bar form the piston would not be there...

I guess in the 41 millenium they will have ways and means.^^
I just found a pic with a nice tracked steamengine:

Yeah - it sounds cool :)
I keep meaning to do 7th Cavalry-themed IG, but never get round to it lol ...

As for ideas - have you had a look at any of the dreadnaughts of that time (Or ironclads as I believe they were known) - the first metal ships...

I absolutly agree about the smoke stack coming off the vehicles. Perhaps simply elongating (or swapping to enlarge) the existing exhaust on the russ would work. For the hellhound it\'s a little bit tougher. The first idea I thought of was a half track with solid iron wheels. Like the wheels on the forge world death korps mortars. You might be albe to encoporate the feul cells into some sort of steam/distiling system for the hell hound. Additionally, the forge world hell hounds have giant fuel cells on the back... might be worth a look.

Love to see some WIP pics of the army.
:)
good luck

The biggest problem with smoke stacks on a tank is that it\'s going to interfere with turret traverse.

I got round the historical anacronisms in my Praetorian army by not having any vehicles whatsoever, just lots and lots of heavy weapon squads. Tanks are nice and all but they aren\'t compulsory for IG armies you can do just as much (if not more) damage by just using heavy platoons.

The ACW (1861-5) and the Zulu Wars (1879) are of a similar time period so if you are interested in getting inspiration from my minis there are a few photos in my WIP thread here
