Need help from the Canadians, eh.

The wife and I have been talking and we're both fairly desperate to get the hell out of Montgomery Alabama and far away from either sets of our families. We've thought of several options, and one of the most appealing would be to move to Canada.

It wouldn't be for a couple years. (she needs to finish her schooling with my GI Bill)

What are some of the most thriving locations for software development? Where are the more pedestrian friendly and ecologically friendly residential areas? (where you can still experience 4 seasons) Iqaluit is not a viable option.

Hey Id,

Since TBS and I are moving to Canada after the wedding I've done a bit of research.

If you go to the Canadian Immigration site it does provide a lot of information and even access to their job bank. I'd suggest going in there and looking at where most of the jobs are. They have thousands of openings though so y'all should be able to find something.

US citizens can stay in Canada for up to six months on a visitor visa alone and some jobs don't require a work permit at all. You may want to check into that option. If you or your wife can/has performed one of the jobs on the list and are willing to do it again then all is good. Also, as long as one spouse has been granted a visa then the other gets to come along on that visa, they just need their own work permit.

A lot can change in a couple of years though so if you aren't thinking about doing this ASAP don't worry too much about the economy and job market. Things could change completely on that front.

My advice would be to investigate what y'all need to do in order to live and work up there. Get the paperwork in order and save up money--if you go on a skilled worker visa you need $13000 CAD as a married couple to prove you can support yourself once in Canada.

Not sure about software development, but there is a lot of game developers in vancouver, so there might actually be quite a bit of software development work. It is very pedestrian friendly city with a lof of different residential areas to choose from. it is quite expensive but if you can find a decent job it shouldnt be too much of a problem. Worth checking out anyway.
