Need help painting stubble and shaved head looks

Hiya, I have just spent a long time converting a terminator command squad, and all bar one have bare heads showing.

I would love to paint these guys as if they have stubble (the 5\'o clock shadow look)and shaved heads but have no idea how to go about this as have never attempted it before.

Have looked at the tutorials but have had no joy. Does anyone have any tips? preferably with pictures of the effect tried and tested on miniatures so I know it works?

Thanks in advance for your support and help. :)

Use a thin blue grey wash. After you have done that you may want to go over it with a thinner wash of flesh color.

I think Nano has a tute on his site cant remeber where the link is tho.

Wash wash wash :p

Start with a very very watered down grey/blue/brown depending on what shade you want your stubble

(For variety you could give some of the men different coloured stubble)

Then, simply repeat until happy with result.

Remember to keep to areas where the hair/stubble naturally grows and beware of overloading the brush, as the watery wash will run badly otherwise.

Use very thin washes of a mix of black, brown and green ink and slowly build up the desired level of stubble. Make sure each layer dries before you apply the next and you should be ok ;)

Cheers, this has all been useful, does anyone have any pictures I could peruse as to how the effect looks when completed?

Or just mix in a tiny bit of grey into your brightest skin tone... as seen on the mounted marauders and duelists in my gallery... easy and reasonably good-looking. :)

Use a thin brown instead of the grey, but in reality working with a good few guys who regularly shave their heads due to hair loss, when it's really short the follicles tend to look a lot darker than the hair colour really is. Even the guy who's seriously grey looks dark.

Just as some insist on using a paint with chips of metal in it to paint their metallics, I insist on using a paint with tiny clips of hair in it to paint facial hair.

what I do is just like a tattoo shouldn't be starkly painted on using the color you desire I mix the tattoo color or 5 o'clock shadow color brown(rhinox hide) dark greys with the flesh color to show some unity of the skin showing through.

^% Best answer in my opinion. Treat it like you are painting sheer clothing...
