need help/tips/advice on painting [update 1]

Hi,
This is my first post on the forum, so hello everyone.
I've returned to painting after 8 years of pause, and decided to make a red/black themed SM army, and I've come across some problems concerning shading red colour.

The thing is that when I use orange/yellow to highlight red areas it looks "fiery". Using pink/white looks, well... like a pig ;) So I've decided to use the "fiery" theme, but I'm not sure if I use it correctly.

So - I'd be glad if someone shared some hints / suggestions on what to correct in the theme.

Another thing is that I've started from a conversion - I wanted a severely wounded / poisoned dying standard bearer. So here are some pictures, and again - I really, really need some guiding here, so thanks in advance...

nice conversion although i think he's going to have som problem holding stuff with his right hand if there's no muscles left on it :D the 'orange' highlight look much better than pink imo, so i think you did the right choice there.

I think the orange one is better too.

To decide, where to set your highlight I have got two littlw tricks. The first one is to put the mini after Basecoating with Black under a very bright lamp and to make a foto. The foto will tell you, wich parts are most highlighted by the light. The second is to base it additionally with white after the Black coat. But use the white only as a mist... Unfortunatelly I have got only one photo, where you can see it:

When you look at the top part, the horns are shades and the left one is dark than the right one. So I know how to paint this correctly.

At Wounded poisoned and dying Marienes I am no help.

Greetings, Taggi

hey, thanks for your input - the trick with taking a photo of a black coated mini seems to be very inspiring, especially as I can choose the lighting point - thanks.
now to the fact that it's impossible to hold anything without muscles - yeah, I know, but it's more dramatic, and the concept is that SMs' dedication to war is strong enough :)
BTW I plan to add some flesh / muscles / blood being torn off - so that it looks like a photo of a momen't of being wounded (and so I've got to make some armor parts falling off too) - hope it'll do the job.

oh, and what was the tehnique used on your mini's skin? it's wet blending? layering? all together? I still can't find a way to do nice, fluent, yet strong and dramatic?

i'll make the spilled blood very dark (i've found a "recipe": plastic cement + red wash + black wash);
my idea was that the mini represents a marine who first was shot and/or hit in close combat and lost his armour, and secondly shot with something that instantly destroys flesh / fat / muscles, but not the bones... no I have to find if there is anything like that in any codex (my bet is Dark Eldar and the Haemonculi :) )

oh, and thx for the tutorial on glazing - I've already used this technique, although didn't know it was glazing, and now I've realised I've been doing a few things wrong, (it's on both shoulderpads for exaple, and the SM's legs and backpack)

ok, got to stage 2...
a) finished the torn arm, added some armor falling off in spills of blood
b) put a Dark Eldar knife, as a sign of the fight.
c) modified a bit the weathering, though I still can't find a way to make it look satisfying
still need to do eyes and the banner, and correct some shading,

So again, I'd like you to tell me if you like the effect, and give me more hints on painting.
Thanks in advance.
