Need Help, Trying 2 Get Back into 40k

After finishing high school, I suddenly had this crazy urge to restart playing 40k. After visiting my local GW store I was amazed at the rule changes, not to mention the army changes along with the prices.

With the price, I heard that 4th editiion is comming out this time next year, so i was wondering whether or not to purchase an army now? If I did, would it be my worth to buy a new codex?

FYI I used to collect a Bad Moon Ork army, love those warp nades!! However, given that the Ork army is in its current situation...<lacking>, I would also like to ask for recommendations of new armies. Tau? Witchhunters? or maybe the good old Guards?

Tau? Witchhunters? or maybe the good old Guards?
Tau : Good at shooting, great tanks, Bleeding less than useless at Close quarters.
Witchhunters: Wait & See
Guards: Lotsa Fire power and tanks, give them some special skills and they can really ruin someones day, hopefully your opponents.

But If you\'ve got Orks, stick with them.
I understand that the current Codexes will be upwardly compatible with the 4th edition. Makes sense to update something and then have to change the whole thing over again........Oh hang on this is GW we\'re talking about right?:D

Stick with Orks for now...

They are considered the \"least broken\" codex, have sub-codices of Speed Freeks (Codex:Armageddon) and Feral Orks (Chapter Approved 2002) and, in a White Dwarf coming soon, the Ork Klans are back!

The new minis are excellent as well (I say \"new\" - I mean new since you last bought an Ork).

As for the new armies, 4th edition won\'t be all that different - the main changes will be with the Assasult and vehicle rules and some loop-holes will be tidied up. So get used to the new rules first and then play a few other armies to see how they work.

Tau are shooty and difficult. Necrons are shooty and easy. Imperial Guard are kinder bueno (\"whatever you want me to be!\").

Welcome home!

Well...

Coll you´re back into 40K, it´s true that the kodex orks won´t be updated for some time, but I must tell you that, as far as I know, it won´t be compatible with 4th. ed. The ones that are - the new ones - are Codex Tau, Necron, Guard, Chaos and Daemonhuters. Little is known about whichhunters, but it´ll still be Sorors with minor (or major) changes I assume;
for my part, I play daemonhunters - they´ve just got the most striking models I think:cool:

GW staff are pretty helpful!!

It was a nice suprise that there was a nice GW staffer that helped me get back and settle into things. Miro!! Well, I kinda knew him from my high school, but that\'s beside the point. He lent me his dogearred (preloved in eBay terms) copy of 3rd edi rule book and got me sorted out on the new armies.

I got the recommendation of collecting a basic 1500pt army and I\'ve decided to go for new line of cadian imperial guards <their starship trooper likeness was the cupid arrow>. Bought a limited edition cadian army box set with a 15% discount.

Anyhoo, I was told to play a few games, get used to the new system and wait for the new edition. Also said that Cadians are going to be very forward compatiable with 4th edition, as basically its background, due to Eye of Terror campaign is gonna be written into the storyline.

I am praying that i can get these models painted up before break ends. Thanks for the help.. guess its happy gaming for me again !!!..

good choice

Imperial Guard - good choice, I also think the new plastic Cadians are the best IG troops you can get, I´m going to take some fo my daemonhunters as allies!
I´t right of course, the imperial guard codex is fuly compatible with 4.ed

I bought the Guard codex a month or so ago, the doctrines system really is a great idea. I\'m hoping they\'ll do a similar thing for marine chapters when their codex gets redone

doctrines for marines... don\'t think that is going to be balanced. Most GW marine chapters already have some uber special rules, eg. deathcompany, black rage. I think they should preserve the space marine nature as elite cults with very unique backgrounds, rather than indoctrine it like the massive IG

Two things...

One - 4th edition will be as backwards-compatible as humanly possible. The first codices to be re-released will be those that are least compatible. As Orks are going to be amongst the last to be re-visited, we may safely assume that they will be compatible with 4th Ed (which, as I keep saying) is really v3.5.

Two - The new Space Marines codex will have something similar to the doctrines system, but different. It will seek to pull all of the current \"types\" into a single codex, except for the \"big three\" (DAs, BAs and SWs) which will get their own, full codices (no \"refer to Codex: Space Marines\").

The SM \"doctrines\" will draw in known types like White Scars, Iron Hands, Crimson Fists, Black Templars, Cursed foundings etc etc, making for a very flexible codex. Note, however, that the rules will require a great deal of WYSIYG input from the modeller. If your marines have the, off the top of my head, \"tech-cult\" doctrine then they will have to look cybernetically augmented.

Will it be balanced? I suspect more balanced than some current codices. GW are learning and refining their rules to meet the US (tournament) demand for clear, legal explanations.

we may safely assume that they will be compatible with 4th Ed (which, as I keep saying) is really v3.5.

In a similar way to the 5th ed of Warhammer Fantasy, which was backwardly compatible with all the old books. Unfortunately, this meant it couldn\'t fix all the stuff that they wanted to. Eventually fixed in 6th ed, accompanied by a re-write of all the books

Lets hope the new edition of 40k doesn\'t have the same problem. I don\'t think it will, as many of the things they want to do in the new edition have already been part-implemented ie new assault rules, vehicle rules etc

Erm, we in the UK also like clear rules for our tourneys too;)

My understanding is about what everyone else has stated, the V4.0 is just 3.0 with the Trial Rules found in Chapter Approved 2004 (TAR: Trial Assuasalt Rules, TVR: Trial Vehicle rules) I say buy a rulebook, codex you want, and Chapter Approved 2004 and you are good to go.

Indeed, I don\'t think we\'ll ever see a \'brand new\' 40k with a new set of books, like 6th ed Warhammer.
The problem is that the codices are very interlinked nowadays, and I can\'t imagine them do a \'Ravening hordes\' -esque book to tide us over while new books are written.
I imagine after the release of the new boxed game they will start by going back over the codices that most need sorting out (ie marines, eldar etc)
