need help with sculpting

I wanna make a 35 mm model of a vampire, a ventrue if you wish to know, with a rapier or otherwise thin sword in his hand. The thing is that I want to give this sword a pommel in the shape of a rose.
My question is how would you do a flower like this?
I thought about folding thin sheets of kneadite and making circles with them which I\'m going to bend out. Any suggestions? ???

Weird thing with roses is they open from the middle, so you would have to sculpt the bud first. I would then layer little strips around it, getting bigger outwards.

I\'m having trouble seeing a hilt as a rose, I keep thinking of an etching like appearance or a rose skewered by a sword.

Radish roses...

I used to work in catering (briefly) and can\'t look at a radish without getting a desire to mutilate it until it looks like a rose. Truly sad.

But...Chrispy is quite right. Roses do open from the middle out but this makes them dead easy to sculpt \'cos you only have to carve from the outside in!!

Where\'s that radish!!!:bouncy:

At that scale I believe it would be best to use Green Stuff and sculpt the rose in layers.

Place a small amount of GW in the area and shape it like the center of a rose, then add a circle of GW and shape this as petals, try it, it\'s easier than it seems.

Hi Wolf,

roses are easy... if they arent like..... REAL small....

in any case.... I find it useful to practice sculpting an object in a slightly larger size using plasticine or some modelling clay that is cheap and easy to handle....

How to do Roses:

1. all rose petals are kinda circular in shape... sooo... roll a small ball till its kinda round. then flatten it.

2. curl the first petal up so that it wraps around itself. This is the centre of the bud.

3. roll more balls which you flatten to make petals and carefully layer it around the central bud so it begins to look like a rose

4. Arrange petals to open up in gradual stages. Inner petals cling closely to the bud outer petals open up wider. Take way any excess petals


add a few leaves and ta da! Instant rose!
cos, the difficult part is when you have to make it in 35mm scale....:p

hmmm you might wanna take a pic of the failed attempts so we can see where it went wrong......

and try it with regular plasticine first, it costs less, can be reused and is good practice in modelling.........

tell ya wat I\'ll make a rose outta clay tonite and posts pics....... I hope we can attach stuff to this forum

i tried a rose the other day with blutac. it was nothing special but ill tell you what i did.

roll out a strip of gs and flatten it. then roll up and pinch one end (this bit where it meets the stem/sword). if you want, then you can either indent the gs around the outside so it looks like petals or add and extra layer of gs petal \'blobs\'. just an idea...

No Problem guys.......:)

I actually learned this method from a chef who was teachin us how to make chocolate roses.....er... since the concept was the same.... I thot.... why not use it with putty????
