Need Help with TAMIYA PAINTS

I\'m painting some 28mm (black hat\'s \"civilians\") and I\'m using Tamiya\'s acrylic as I want to expand my experiences :duh:
So far so good: I thin with tamiya thinner (could I use water?) and I know that flat base is meant to be added to glossy paints (haven\'t found the right proportions yet).
QUESTION: I tried testor\'s dull coat on one of my civilians, it had been drying for about 12 hours, and the light spray made some of the paint drool (is that the right word?)
Is it a problem due to not enough drying time?
OTHER QUESTION: my brushes are suffering a lot with those paints, and rincing each time I reload dosen\'t make
a difference - how can I solve that?

Many thanks for any info and or advice!!

Tamiya Acrylics are... touchy.

I find that even with the acryl thinner, the paint itself will eat away any prior layers. Heck, you could almost strip a mini in the stuff. I tend to only use clear red, orange, and smoke, because I can use them in thin, small quantities without jeapordizing my earlier coats of paint. Anything more than a thin layer, you risk brushing off earlier paint coats. If you time it right, though, you can improve your blends, as it will start to break up the underlying layer and mix with the Tamiya color. Works great for reds.

Now, if you use them as basecoats (I never have, because I only have clears and smoke), you should allow them to dry fully, which I think is about 24hrs. After that, you shouldn\'t have any problem with a spray or brush on varnish.

Hope this helps.

Not really. Try it, but from what I\'ve read you\'re much better off with their thinner (screen wash works well too I think).

Possibly, but Dullcote is a \'hot\' finish that can dissolve many paints in the right (wrong?) circumstances.

** Einion** I use series 7 brushes (outchhh).
I\'m not sure I understand what a \"hot\" finish is - can you expolain please? (my english is limited)

**Temporary Sanity** I HAVE stripped a mini using that stuff!

The flat base is tricky too - getting the right ratio of paint2flat2thinner is not easy

By \"hot\" I believe he means it has a lot of solvent that has to evaporate. That solvent can eat away your paint if you lay too much of it at one time.

I\'ve used the flat base occassionally but with GW paints rather than Tamiya. I find that a very small amount goes a long way with them. As with others here, I only have clear red, and smoke as well as thinner and flat base. Not tried using the main paint range so can\'t offer any real help, sorry.

i tried mixing these tamiya acrylic with water, found it made the paint kind of curdle and go all clumpy.

even with the thinner these seem a pain to use, they now live im my box of random never to be used stuff, heh

I\'ve been working with tamiya\'s acrylics for the past two days and I discovered this:
they ARE great. But you need to find the secret.
Being a nice girl I\'ll share it with you
(quantities are examples)
three drops of paint plus one of thinner (tamiya\'s) plus two drop of water..... makes a mess as the alcohol and water seperate or something like that. BUT: more water and it works!!! The problem is not enough water and nothing else.
I have not yet found the secret for using flat base.
These paints are great, just don\'t press like crazy with the brush and you wont see any lift off problems!!!

comments??

What makes them great? Comparing to GW and Vallejo acrylics I mean? Is there something you can do with them that you can\'t do with those?

I do use Tamiya clear sometimes for some effects. It\'s pretty cool.
