Need small advice about painting metallic armor on miniatures

Hello friends, I am trying to improve my painting on miniatures, especially when it come to metallic armor parts. Sometimes the silver or steel color look too flat for me, and I cannot get that nice shine effect many painters here achieve. I see many of your models with amazing weathering and edge highlights, so I want to ask how you balance shadows on steel armor without making it dirty. In my daily work I deal with steel takeoff, so maybe my mind always think in real-life material quantity takeoff instead of artistic shading. Because of this I get confused how much dark tone to add on steel parts to make it look natural on small scale. If anyone has simple tips or maybe a good example to follow, I would be very thankful. I really enjoy learning from the painters here because the quality is very high.
