Need some advice on metallics (NMM and the real stuff)

I\'ve been painting for a few months now, and I\'m finding it\'s a hobby I can really get into. I\'ve read all the articles and got all the right brushes, so now I\'m working on the skill part. :) One thing I want to improve is my NMM. Here is one of my latest attempts:

I\'m working on a dreadnought right now, and I\'m having some difficulty on the metal, so any advice would be really helpful.

Also I am running into a problem with some of my models. Some of them have a grainy texture, not smooth like they should be. This shows up a lot when I paint metallics, like this:

How can I get the ultra smooth look I see from eavy metal or the Better CMON models? I am using a quality black spray paint to undercoat, it starts
smooth, but maybe this is the problem?

Any crit or advice would be great.

when eavy metal and the masters of mini painting paint, they build up the colours with lots and lots of very thin layers of paint, gradually blending and building up the colour.

try thining your paints down that should solve a couple of problems.

your nmm is pretty nice but on the true metals it looks as if you jst dry prushed it one colour...

Try going from Boltgun- shade with red, that but add a bit of vermin, then add very very little black(remember keep thinning A LOT!!) then wash alover, by adding some green, then using the theory of NMM highlight with very thinned down boltgun.

takes a long time to get right, but its really good!!(and the guy in my local GW told me it:eek::eek:lollol

With Metallics try to keep as many of your brush strokes in the same direction. this hlpes to reduce the \"Speckled\" effect of the mettalic flakes to some extent.

Also Look to this article
Automaton\'s Mettallics For a very good means of achiving First Class mettallics.

That\'s a really, really good article. I was lucky enough to stumble onto it before I started my WFB dwarf army. Even with speed painting rank\'n\'file troopers, I was able to take some of Seb\'s tips and vastly improve the metallics on the dwarves.

Good tip.

That is a great true MM article indeed.

Not to pimp my own site but I have a tutorial on NMM with larger pics on my site in the tips section. Hopefully that would be of some help.
