Need tips for painting Wood

Hiho everybody, well i am about to paint some minis for a competion i want to enter this year. Now my problem ist that i want to paint Wood on a flat surface so it looks as realistic as possible, but i dont really know how to do. If you have some tips or maybe even some pics be nice and share it with me please.
