Need tips on how to improve - pics included

I would greatly appreciate any tips you can give me on how to improve my painting technique.

As always, I will leave comments on your galleries if you are kind enough to do the same for me. More pics will be added in next week, thanks!

I think if you added a few of the shots together and resized some of the pics, you might get better results. Your paint jobs look very good, with such large pics, but making them a bit smaller with more shots would help.

Very good blending work, and I especially like the \'bone\' or insignia areas that you\'ve done.

Aren\'t you about sick of the color red???lol

you allready have a pretty nice technique, i must say. You paint very neatly.

You could however continue by adding more highlights and shadings to your minis, they come across a tad flat. Just add more layers and try to blend them as smooth as possible by using thin paint.

You also tend to focus your highlights on the edges instead of where the light might fall. It is effective to make those contrasted highlights but don\'t put one on every edge. try to imagine a light source and put you highlights accordingly to that. You don\'t have to be very exact in the beginning. Just avoid to purely edge the mini.

painting black is alway an issue.. especially for armies. You can try to first subtly highlight the area with greys and then glaze the area with black + red ink (or perhaps another suitable ink). As it has a tendency to turn out to grey. The ink gives a very nice depth to the black.

to sum it up, you are on your way. Just explore what you can do and challenge yourself a bit. Look at how other people have have done for reference and read alot of articles.

your darks are pretty dark, but the highlights need to be taken up another level or 2.

My normal speil is to think of stage makeup.. to get something so far away under such bright lights to look \"right\" the areas have to be amplified - darker darks and brighter lights.

Vike - yes, I am sick of red.

Avelorn - thanks for the advice, I will use that. Unfortunately you are right about the \"flatness\" in these pics. The black looks too stark (because, at the end of the day, it is just line hilights). The red does actually look a lot better in real life though. My camera never does a good job on red (no, honest!). I use a lot more blue these days though, hopefully I can boost my rating with my next batch of pics.

Airhead - thanks also for the advice. I am going to concentrate on shading (as opposed to hilights) though, as I think it will be more time-efficient.
