hi guys, i am new to the forum and relativley new to posting pics.

its all dragon reaches fault, i was happy painting armies for people and he got me thinking about proper painting again.lol

any way (i always ramble) i was hoping some of you regular forum users could take a look at this http://www.coolminiornot.com/110653

and give me some good constructive critisism.
to be honest the points don\'t realy matter (i talk shite as well) as it\'s critisim i am after, peoples painting skills don\'t matter to me, as every one has an opinion and ideas that can help.

cheers guys.

Hello Chris, and welcome to the forum :). (Didn\'t we meet at GD UK 2005?)

You might want to try to give people rather this link :

http://www.coolminiornot.com/110653

The NMM is great (maybe one or two more shiny spots and it\'ll be perfect), but what I really like is the blue shield gem. Great effect.

Thanks Mike for bringing (dragging ;)?) Chris here :).

1 - Welcome to the Forums

2 - Better Link This is easier to use.

3 - Really nice work! I really like the big gemstone on the shield. Nice base work. The freehand on the cloak is good. The armor is good too. There is just something missing and I can\'t quite put my finger on it. Just needs something to make it \"Pop\" Hopefully someone else\'ll come along and answer that one.

4 - Get much better and you\'ll want to stay out of hammer\'s reach of Dragonsreach :D

5 - \"Vored\" on it :D Even though you said the points don\'t matter.

6 - Damn! Even as I\'m typing I see GreenStuff beat me to it with the better link and all. Damn people interupting expecting me to work while I\'m at work  Can\'t they see I\'m busy:mad:

i was working in the bolton store at the time, so was unable to get to games day.

thanks for the advice on the link i have changed it. technology and me only agree when instruments are involved

you would remember me if we had met, i have a shaved head and a goatee. (imagine an english kerry king lol)

thanks fore the advice on the glare.
for the gem i painted it with a pure blue ink(gw), then use a mix of black and turquoise when it gets to turquiose and ivory and there you go.

Welcome to the forums. Come on down to Off Topic and make Mike buy you an e-ale.

GS nailed the NMM stuff. I think the freehand may be a bit overdone, but that seems to be a GW style thing right now.

I also think it would help to have something besides a white background. A link to a blue/white fade can be found in my sig or a neutral gray. Often, a stark white background will mess up the exposure on the camera.

@Chris : sorry about the mixup. Mike came with a friend of his, so I thought it might have been you.

@green stuff : I\'m at work too, but don\'t tell my boss :p.

Welcome to the fourms..

Nice work, Voted..

As for comments, I think your freehand on the front lets it down some but for a 2nd NMM attempt it looks great. I especially love the Gem Sone in the shield..it looks like a eye.

cheers guys, keep the comments coming.

it\'s all the little things that different people notice that makes you look back at the model and see what they see.

just like when you look back at a lot of your old models and cringe.

Nice work fella - keep that up and you\'ll be the best painter in Bolton very soon! Do you know of any other good painting folk in area (DR aside)?

between westhoughton and wigan i know of only myself an mike.
there is a painter or two in bolton i know who can produce some nice results one of which is a gw manager (roger) and the other is ex gw bolton staff (gav)
there are a couple of people who i am giving tips to and seeing them come on in leeps and bounds.

the big reason i came on cmon was, i wasn\'t seeing mike enough to get regular advice.
he kept on mentioning that this place was a treasure trove of advice as well as alot of helpful and realy nice people.

and you know what, he was right(bloody know it all) lol

I quite like the freehand on the metals, it could do with a little more work with shading and highlighting to help make it look a touch more engraved but it\'s passable.

On the other hand I\'m not at all keen on the freehand on the fabric, in comparison it\'s quite thick and rough looking. Going back over the edges with a fine detail brush and the brown that you\'ve used would help to tidy that up. I think the colours are a little stark for me too, something a little softer (like a lighter brown) would help to avoid the harsh look too.

You seem to have quite a good grasp on NMM and how light reflections work, the highlights come up nicely and look very smooth.

The brown fabric looks way under highlighted to me, personally I\'d have prefered to see it come up more, and have more shading in the recesses. But that\'s more a personal preference than a problem with the painting. Some people prefer a more subtle effect.

Over all it\'s a very nice piece! Great work on the gem too BTW, considering it\'s size I don\'t know what I\'d have done with it!
