Nels0nmacs' GD WIP log

So here I go again. A WIP of what will hopefully end up being 3 of my UKGD entries for this year. Bit of a change on previous years in that I have 3 major projects to work on rather than just the 1 that I have tended to do in previous years and then fill in any gaps with stuff from my personal collection.

I have decided to dump all the stuff for each entry onto this thread. That way it should hopefully be easier for me to manage and it may get slightly more regular updates, but don't hold your breath.

So first up ...WH40K Squad - a squad of an Eldar Farseer and 4 warlocks mounted on jetbikes. This is something that has been sitting in the back of my mind for a number of years as something I wanted to have a go at and finally, now I am getting around to it. The jetbikes will have extra sidepanels in a similar vein to what Scibor produced. The pics shows the direction I am taking with regard to that. I will probably also add n some extra vanes coming from the back of the bikes.
The farseer and warlocks will be converted using the top half of metal figures and the arms and legs of the plastic rider. Those will have cloak pieces added to them with greenstuff. Oh and they will be painted in Saim Hann colours.

Second entry - WH40K vehicle. When I originally saw the Tauros Venator model on Forge Worlds' site I just fell in love with it. To me it looks so cool:glasses-cool:. This will be a "fairly simple" job where the vehicle itself will have no real modifications to it other than where the wheels are concerned. I imagined the Tauros being driven at a fair whack through a dusty, rocky terrain. The base will capture the moment as the Tauros is going around a corner kicking up dust as the wheels dig in. To help get the feel I decided to play with the suspension and drilled through where the axels so that I can have the vehicle tilting over to one side to give the impression of a bit of roll as it corners. I also drilled through the front suspension to allow me to turn them to one side.

The big challenge where this model is concerned is creating the dust cloud kicked up by the offside wheel. I have done some experiments with cotton wool. Pics to follow shortly.

Third and final major - Diorama - Buzzgobs ejektor seat. This will be the first year, hell first time ever that I have properly worked on a diorama. I didn't originally plan on doing one, I bought the Buzzgob model as a treat for myself at last years GD and because I spent over £50 I got the Sqwadron pilot as well. Seeing them both together created a wondeful image in my mind that solidified into an idea for a diorama. The basic premise of the diorama is that the pilot has been invited into Buzzgobs backyard where he tests out stuff. In this case a new Ejektor seat... which is of course what every Ork pilot wants, which is why he looks worried and confused. The seat is in traditional Orky fashion - a seat with a big spring under it.

I roughed out the layout of the yard in cardboard to make it quick and easy to get all of the bits to be the right size and in the right place. So Buzzgobs workshop at the back with the Ork himself and the pilot on a platform overlooking the experiment. Buzzgobs lackeys to the sides and a bunch of grots pulling on ropes to pull the seat down onto its base.

So that's it so far. I should have some more updates on the first 2 shortly. Buzzgob will have to wait a bit longer.

Personally, I'm excited to see the ejektor seat. I love anything that has to do with those insane mekboys. Looks like you're going with a Saim-Hann color scheme for the Eldar, then?

@ NFA - the Buzzgob is painted using the NMM technique. I'll try and get better pics of him up soon.

Update. The first 3 of the Eldar bikers are on their way. A good deal of sawing and chopping and I now have the basis of 3 warlocks riding thier bikes.

They will all have Singing Spears when they are finished. Not sure yet about the farseer whether he will have a spear or just the usual witch blade. The one on the left will lose the pistol and be replaced with a spear. So far just basically assembled, I'll be sculpting on some cloth to cover thier arms and legs so that they are closer to what they look like off their bikes.

The side panels have had various tests and I think I'm almost there with getting the detail just how I wamnt it to be.
View attachment 5099View attachment 5100 The first pic shows a sheet of acrylic which I have laser etched into using various settings to see what will work best when I make imprints. The second pic shows some of the imprints that I am trying out and to get an idea of how the colours will work when it's painted and to see how the detail comes out using the designs on the acrylic sheet. At the moment the lettering at the front on the green version is the size that I am aiming for. I've also tried using Green stuff and Milliput to see which is best for making the imprints and it seems that the Milliput works the best, that plus it's easier to work on after it has dried to make any minor adjustments.

Bonus time-- what with all the bits of warlock that I had lying around I have made a brand new one using components from 3 metal warlocks and a plastic arm from the Eldar biker. Turned out quite nice.

Looking great so far mate. Also really like the pose on the warlock you have there. The outstretched hand is neat.

Not a lot to update today .. just a better pic of Buzzgob.... due to being ill for the last 3 days. Tuesday night saw me endure what was the worst 3 hours of my life so far. Never have I been so ill.... even when I was a youth and drunk too much I didn't feel as rough as I did on Tues. Basically there is this sickness and diahorreah (sp?) bug going around and I thought I had missed out on it. The wife has had it, my mum had it... i thought I was safe. Felt fine for all of Tuesday until about 7pm when it started coming out the back end. At 9pm it came out violently from the top end too. Now a good set of lungs is great for making yourself heard but boy does it hurt when they turn against you when you are being sick.
Anyway after 3 days of being quarantined in my bedroom - we have an 8 month old daughter and we seriously don't want her getting this bug - I am now released once more so that I can get on.

@ Master - the idea with the jetbikes is to produce a set of resin parts for the side panels and extra details to make it easier to mold them to the shape of the canopy. It would be easy enough to produce a few more if the need arose. Converting the riders is a bit more work.

Anyway here's Buzzgob:_

Finally I get around to updating what is going on with my projects -- to be fair not too much at the moment, a lot of RL stuff occupying my time. Anyway some progress has been made on the 3 projects so here's whats been happening.

Eldar Jetbikes - the original idea of the acrylic push mold seemed like a good idea, the original trials worked out well. However when I finally got the sheets ready and tried it at first I thought it had worked really well.... but then when it came to pop them out it showed that it hadn't. They didn't come out cleanly and there were bits of Milliput stuck in the small groves which would mean that tidying up the acrylic would have been a complete nightmare. The word bollocks sprang to mind. So onto plan B.
Plan B was to use the CAD drawing that I used for the acrylic to create a set of brass etch pieces for the side panels. I hadn't chosen this path first as it cost £36 to have them produced whereas the acrylic route was free. Hey ho. After a 2 week wait for them to arrive they're here. JOY!!!:victory: Looking lovely. Added bonus the etching process has effectively chamfered the edge for me which will make it look a bit more sleek. Just right for a jetbike.

Tauros Venator - no work on the vehicle itself but the base is coming along nicely. First it was blocked out in white chemiwood with an MDF base for solidity and to give me something to stick a border to later on. Then it was chiseled out to give me the rough workings to suggest depressions in the road where vehicles have been before. More noticeable behind the Tauros. The rocks are ornamental garden slate which I got from my garden. Next stage is to coat the top surface with polyfiller to smooth it out a bit and then to apply a dusting of sand. The depressions behind the Tauros will have some tread marks in them.
View attachment 5570View attachment 5569 Incidentaly the yellow to the left of the Tauros in the first pic was my original test of using cotton wool to represent the front tires kicking up dust. Odviously lots of work needed but more on that later.

Finally Buzzgobs yard - not much done here. Just getting the basic elements together to be able to work on it more later on.
View attachment 5571 Again white chemiwood on MDF. This time 10mm foamex to make up the wall of Buzzgobs workshop.
