Well, darklord started it, so here\'s my entry to the Rotten Harvest:

I was pretty pleased with it, but I realise now that it\'s got some problems. One thing I noticed from the competition is that opinions were really divided on this. Some people liked the base but not the mini, or vice versa, for example. I\'d be really grateful for honest criticism, I think I need it! lol

I like it, but as I commented I think the model and the base kind of melt together a little too much, visually I mean. It\'s one of those things where I can\'t tell if the fig or the base is being shown off.

I hope that doesn\'t sound too harsh, as I really like the package together. The base is the strongest point of it IMO.

To me both the base and the model are nice - but maybe the combination of colours and layout of the base means that I found my eyes keep flicking from one to the other never quite letting them rest on any one.
It\'s a shame because both parts look quick lovely.

Thank for the replies! I appreciate honesty.

One of the things I thought about when painting was the fact that this moster can be invisible, so I guess I was trying to make him \"merge\" a bit. To tie the colours together, I used the same colours (shadow grey and ice blue) in the shading and highlights, but clearly it\'s a technique I need to practice much, much more! Maybe I used too much of each, so the colours blend together too much. The base also has a lot of ice blue too, and perhaps that isn\'t helping either.

Could you post some new pics with different lighting. I think they\'re quite dark in places and the gradient background may not be helping. I wonder if this will make a difference to the mini - it may be the photo is the issue rather than the painting.

I can see where there might be a need for more contrast, but I have to say the whole thing is cool. I love the gritty base it gives a creepy feeling to the whole piece. Like this thing is wandering around a long abandoned science facility, or a derilict space ship.

I shall see what I can do. Now I\'ve finished a few big important things, I have time to sit back and review some things, and I don\'t have too much planned this w/end (apart from strip-cleaning my flat!).

@supervike: Thanks, that\'s exactly the look I was going for! The beastie is from the Hybrid board game expansion- so LOTS of creepy abandoned weird science facilities!

As for the contrast, if you\'re confident you could crack out a highlight colour (skull white/fortress grey if you want them cold, bleached bone if you want them warm, I\'d suggest a mix of the former), and blend a final couple of layers of highlight into the face and a little working up to the face in order to draw the attention there. You would still be tied into the base I think. That\'d deal with the focus on the model, maybe the next thing would be to deal with the draw of the base - maybe dull that down a bit. The thing that draws me to it is the green/redbrown contrast - maybe a very thin layer or few of chaos black or equivalent between the colours would help separate them a bit and keep the eye from being drawn there to differentiate between the hues.

Well that\'s all just a thought, it\'s really a very nice model already!
