Never\'s Dark Angels Army Log (Missile Launcher Scout WIP 9/29/2007)

Wanted to post a few pics of the first of my DA army. This was very much a test space marine.

Lots of firsts. First attempt at free hand on the shoulder guard. First attempt at damage (bullet holes, scratches).

And it\'s only the third space marine I\'ve ever painted.

Will post pics of the Vet. Sergeant of this squad and the rest of the squad soon.

Note: The pics are poor quality. Wasn\'t able to use any kind of setup, so I just worked with what I had.

Comments are definitely wanted. As a note: I thought I did a really good job of thinning the paint, but after taking pictures it seems either I put on the matte varnish too thick or incorrectly, or I had my paint too thick.

Pictures removed due to broken links. Go here to find them: Picture Page

I used to get that kind of bumpy texture when I used a brush that was too small. For some reason I thought I needed to be painting the entire mini with a 3/0 or smaller. Common mistake, I understand. A good size 1 brush will have as fine a point as a smaller one, and will give better results because your paint won\'t start drying before you can get it on the figure.

It looks like you are improving, though, keep it up!

Well that\'s definitely the problem then. haha For most of the figure I used a 0 or 3/0. I\'ll have to use a bigger brush.

Thanks for the tip. The next batch will probably improve greatly if that\'s the problem.

So here are some much better pics. I need brighter more daylighty bulbs (any suggestions on brand and wattage is welcome) but I have a decent setup now.

Actually this is going to be quite a few pics.

The first ones are of the same marine as earlier, just with more even lighting (Though darker than I\'d like) and some better quality views.
(Pictures removed for broken links, to find the pictures go to Pictures Page )

Now come the pics of the full squad. The chainsword is being replaced shortly with a power fist painted the deathwing bone white. I think the veteran sergeants deserve at least bone white weapons. :)

And finally a couple closeups of the mud effect I tried to do with a couple bases. First attempt at this, so comments are welcome.

As always, any comments and suggestions are more than welcome. I\'m still doing the iconography.

Did my first freehand of the winged dagger last night and it came out alright. Will post pics for suggestions and comments on that soon, as well as the sergeant with his power fist.

looks fine mate.
For the mud effect I would suggest that you use whatever you use but in a thicker mix. I would also suggest a dustier color maybe like graveyard earth - maybe do a paste in your chosen color, sometimes makes it easier to see what you\'ll end up with.

Took some more pictures. These are of the freehand winged dagger I did, and of the Vet. Sergeant with his Power Fist.

Tried some weathering on the Power Fist. The only good picture of it came out blurry, but you can kind of see it in one of the others.

Here\'s my latest. An attempt at some eye glowing OSL. I thought it turned out well, but here are some pics. Any help with OSL is welcome since this is my first attempt at it. This is just my test head for it, although I have thought about putting it on the Vet. Sergeant with the Power Fist.

Any suggestions about what kind of mini it would look good on are helpful too. Since it came out pretty well I\'d like to use it.

So here are the pics:

And there we have it. So any tips on OSL or any comments are more than welcome as always.

my first suggestion is to paint the eye the same colour as the glow. the glow seems pretty solid and i think it shouldnt be as its going over a dark base. for reference get a red light and shine it on a dark surface.

other than that all is lookg good.

There is no trick to the photo. I just took it in to photo shop and pressed auto balance

If you can find a white balance setting on your camera before you take the picture or set you light setting to show what light you are working under my guess is florescent lights before you picture

Or you can get a free program GIMP if you do not have any other to do an auto balance on you photo after you take them also.
You have some great work that is not being seen in the yellow haze, thought I may help

Thanks for the points on the OSL. First try at it, and I think I had the same reaction. For a red light it\'s way too strong. Going to try a couple things with it. I\'ll post pics of some finished simple freehand stuff in the next day or so.

Thanks again for comments. After I get the Vet. Sergeant done I probably won\'t be posting anything new for a while.

EDIT: So I Installed that free program GIMP and after doing some white balance, this is what I got from a few of the previous pictures:

Enjoy. They look much better now. Thanks for the GIMP suggestion. :)

Ok so I wasn\'t planning on doing any painting today, but on my lunch break I decided to try what Jester said about making the eye the same color as the glow, etc. And I have to say I love the effect that came out.

So here\'s the Vet. Sergeant looking twice as badass as he did before after quite a bit of making over.

I also revisited my first space marine ever, the company master (from the Space Marine Captain box) the other day, adding purity seals to the gun and shoulder, as well as touching up some areas, making the cloak more bone colored and changing the power sword from a sad attempt at making it look metal to a slightly better attempt at making it look ... well powerful. I also put the Iron Halo actually around his head, and added a banner, which I haven\'t finished yet.

So I hope you all have some comments/suggestions and that you enjoy.

I\'m going to be going back and touching up this guy. Completely repainting his loin cloth thing/perhaps scrapping it for another. Touching up the paint job in it\'s entirety, etc. etc.

I mean it has to match the really good looking (so far) Power Fist and the OSL.

This guy will also get some touching up on most of the gold areas, and the banner needs to be finished.

Alright post all the comments and suggestions you\'d like. And enjoy.

Changes, Changes. Redid some colors on the Company Master and have it nearly completed.

Any suggestions of whether to keep the bird at the top of the banner pole, or to hack it off, or what colors are good with it, are welcome.

I also finished the Vet. Sergeant except for drybrushing some cork rocks.

Here are the final pictures.

Any suggestions or comments are more than welcome. :)

Ha Ha. An update finally. Finished up my 3rd Company Master, changed some things around from the first time I did him, and I\'m liking it so far.

Feedback is appreciated on this guy.

Really like both of them, especially the commander. The cloak and the sword are ace! Glowing eye on the other beakie is really nice as well.

Keep up the great work

Cheers,
Tom

Ok so yeah, this is a necro of a thread but with good reason. I\'ve just recently finally had time to do some more painting (damn last year of college), so I got a sniper squad for my birthday from my younger brother, and I just started painting the first one yesterday. I have some WIP pics to post, and some questions about colors and stuff. So first the pics:

A pretty good start, took the pic to compare the bleached bone right leg to the skull white/bleached bone left leg to see which color I preferred.
1394042642_af91aa8302_o.jpg

A lot done since the last pic. Used Foundation paints for the first time on the armor and inside and outside of the cloak. I must say I\'m a huge fan of the foundation paints after doing that cloak.
1394042736_df6f9f1668_o.jpg

A pic of the cloak from the back. Shaded it subtly so that I can add the camo freehand later.
1394042808_d0ce62aa0f_o.jpg

The next couple pics show him at the stage he\'s at now. All that\'s left are some lenses, the gun, and some wires, and little bits and pieces aside from that.

1394043054_f80d57a753_o.jpg

Also if you see any mold lines, just ignore them, I\'m painting these as purely gaming pieces, and any mold lines that weren\'t serious I didn\'t bother with. Although there\'s a huge piece of plastic between his left hand and the bottom of the gun which will be removed before I paint the gun.

So here are my questions. For the gun, Other color options besides red? I\'m probably going to do it black, but red is a stupid color for a sniper.

Also does anyone have any pictures of some good atypical camo patterns. I\'m not going to do the typical Hunter camo pattern, so I\'m looking for ideas. The colors involved would be shades of green and shades of brown and perhaps black.

So yeah, I finished pretty much everything on the first scout except for the back.

I need some ideas about camouflage patterns. Here\'s a picture from the front and a picture of the back.

Need ideas on camo. (Decided on the black gun with dark red cords. Looks much better IMO than the red guns with pale yellow cords in the DA army book.)

EDIT: Arg. Just noticed some paint had chipped/rubbed/who knows what off the bottom of the cloak. :( I blame the cat. :(
