Hey there! I was recently browsing around my local hobby shop and I noticed they had the new \"How to Paint\" book by GW. It looked pretty good and I was thinking of picking it up soon. What does everyone else think of it?

I haven\'t seen the new one yet, but I can almost guarantee that it will be just like the older paint books.

They are great for beginners and have some handy step-by-step tutorials, but keep in mind you can find a lot more helpful tutorials online.

Take a browse through it at you local game store and see if it interests you.

I\'ve found with books like those, that you can probably find those techniques online, for the most part. The value however, is a tangible, handheld picture book, full of inspiration.

Wel since the contributors are Astonia, Razza, Mr F, Brokenblade and Durham Red, the quality of painting and the explanations are better than previous efforts.
However it\'s still primarily aimed at GW\'s target demographic, so even with the level of talent mentioned it\'s not a guide to painting to win a Golden Deamon Statue.
Granted it\'s a much better book than previous incarnations (Post McVey), but as mentioned there are a lot of other sources available on the Internet.

its not exactly new its been out for a month or so and its just help painting armies to a decent satandard, aimed at a gamer more than a painter...

to be honest I always buy them if nothing else other than to make my book shelf look fuller... Also my dreadnought is in it (although apparently a very dark pic) so I suppose I should get it.. I just wish GW could see the market potential they have to release a truly high level painting guide with the facilities and talent at their disposal...

Probably will never happen, because if you want to do it WELL it has to be 300-400$ book in the end and the market for books in this price range is rather limited. If you try to save on the quality of photographs, you probably could keep it under 100$ but then who would really want it :)

As for the new \"How to\" book. It is good for what it is intended for. Namely, painting miniatures fast that would look good from, say 2-3 feet distance. It has some limited theory and mixing charts too and it is pretty. If you are really just beginning or as a collectors item this book is good.

It was a lot more basic than I expected it to be but good to flick through and pick bits up here and there. The pics are well done and it\'s organised into nice bite-size sections.
I\'m like D/H - I tend to buy them to boost my collection of painting books.

I got to look at the new book today. It is much more organized and explanatory than the previous edition. I will not be buying it because, as stated, there are much better articles on here.

I bought the previous one well before I had ever heard of this site. It would have been nice when I was just starting out. Miles better than the previous one, I must say.

not necessarily that much depends on how much you want to cover..... They have the equipment and facilities for good photography and putting together good guides , They have huge asset in the eavy metal team .. Let loose those guys and gals have an enormous talent. It doesn\'t necessarily need an uber bible but they could cover so much more in depth and at a higher level than they do..

Yeah I picked this up. It\'s a solid book with some nice resources for painting various materials, how to use the new washes etc.

I\'m always open to advice even if it\'s aimed at beginners (which I still am tbh!).

I looked through the book at my local store - it is a nice book, it is true that is is aimed at beginners/early advanced painters, but this is not a bad thing. I am far from being an expert painter (some of you may know my work) but I am also a regular gamer at my local shop and I can promise you that 99% of the people there would greatly profit from the book. Actually 90% would profit from at least being able to thin the paint and to apply even coats of paint. It sounds really harsh l know but it is the truth out there, believe me. So I´m really happy GWmakes such books.
