New Citadel Washes?

Yeah I\'ll have to find some of that folk art medium too! I love the new washes, but a variety of colors would be great too. (Plus I went on a spending spree when I heard about the discontinued paints. I bought several of each ink and half a dozen brazen brass!) lol So I should have plenty of inks to mix with the medium. Too bad GW doesn\'t sell mixing pots anymore.

I think the washes are fantastic and have proven to work for me at least, but I\'d not get rid of any of my old inks - sometimes it\'s nice to have just that extra bit of intensity that the inks deliver!

I really do think that the washes are just relatively transparent paint + water + matte medium. Nothing all that special that you can\'t do by yourself with a bottle of artist\'s matte medium (I use Liquitex) and your own paints. You\'ll get a wider range of colors as well.

i have tried that but with no success. i find that my own concoctions with matte medium never flow right and dry weird.

i have found that tamiya clear does a similar job but iirc, it dries shiny

I find that they are great for shading metallics without the shine of ink and less chance of tide lines when painting at 3am!

The gradual build up of pigment works well for producing smooth but fast shading ( faster than a hundred plus layers of heavily diluted paint anyway). Generally I find that most complaining about them do so because they are expecting them to behave the same way that inks do and also expect oodles of pigment right off the bat.

The only semi whinge I would have is one that I half expected to have prior to purchase which is that I only use the same colours and seem to neglect the rest.
Devlan Mud, Gryphonne Sepia, Badab Black and to a lesser degree Ogryn Flesh make good metal shades. I also use gryphonne sepia as a general all purpose wash that I go back to the most frequently and it is good for shading flesh when used in conjunction with ogry and some deval for darker areas.

They taste really bad (brush lickers beware!) and it sometimes, when using the Devlan mud, it feels like you are painting with mucus, but I love the results.

In short..

I like them :D

Got the set off Ebay and I like all the ones I\'ve tried. Citadel get a Gold Star sticker to take home to mum!

;)

I\'ve found that they need a different way of painting. When I first started using them they didn\'t do what I was wanting/expecting, but with a little practice and changing how I use them they are great. $ thumbs up :)

Keep in mind that Citadel Foundation and Washes aren\'t necessarily designed for your average Golden Demon winner. They are first and foremost about speed and simplicity of use. Some of the staple techniques don\'t really apply to Foundations and Washes, but you can churn out gaming level minis a LOT faster than before with them.

They do a great job for what they\'re designed for, and hopefully we can find some ways to make them as versatile for high end projects as tried and true old paints.

One thing I am very curious about: The Citadel airbrush mentions spraying Washes for batch shading miniatures... basically speed dipping. Is this even possible? Airbrushes go on thin and evenly, so would they have a chance to pool on the textures at all? I have virtually zero time to paint anymore, and so that doesn\'t give me much chance to mess around with airbrushing washes.

Hmm... I have some Matte Medium that i use for some of my more \"shiny\" paints. I do think i might mix up some GW ink, water and matte medium and see how it works.

I was using Ogryn Flesh wash the other day and ended up with a very glossy finish - hasn\'t anyone else had this problem, as no one seems to have mentioned it?

I have noticed this too. Ogryn Flesh does tend to end up a little glossy. I\'m not sure why. The other wash colors turn out fairly matte. A light spray of Testor\'s Dullcote will solve that problem though.

They tend to gradually build up a shine the more layers you put on. Also, if you dilute them they tend to develop the shine a bit quicker. But, as Matt said, nothing that can\'t be fixed with a bit of Dullcoat.
