I have a lovely big red handled stanley knife that I use to get rid of mould lines. It\'s odd though because I only hold the blade not the handle. I suppose I like the balance that the big chunky handle provides... wierd I wonder why I use it like that???

Those are scalpel blades! Scalpel blades might be sharp, but they\'re the wrong thing entirely for modelling. We need strong blades that aren\'t going to flex. That\'s just *cough* somebody *cough* making a very quick and thoughtless buck without regard to what might happen if the blades snap.

Appalling.
Hate to tell you Modderrhu but modellers have been using Scalpel blades since before I was a Nipper.
I\'ve used \'em and still have all my fingers attached and the scars on my hands are from a Stanley knife, Screws and Chisels. :)

Ive been in the hospital 3 times for stitches in the last 10 years.. twice were from cuts from brand new Swan Morton #11 blades while I was cutting apart sculpts so they could be molded. The other time was from a razor sharpe wood chisel.. Im lucky I still have 10 fingers lol

I still wouldnt give up using a surgical scalpel for modeling though..best knife out there.

Agreed. Craft blades are much stronger than scalpel blades and far less likely to break catastrophically used for our purposes. In addition to that the attachment of the blade is much more secure for a craft blade than on a scalpel.. well actually there\'s no comparison is there?

I worked in traditional graphics studios (doing paste-ups, where galleys and other elements were cut up and pasted onto boards) for a few years and some people used scalpels and some used craft blades. So trust me when I say this: for any robust applications craft knives are safer to use than scalpels.

Just think about it: scalpels were designed to cut skin and tissue; craft blades were designed to cut wood, plastic and other tough stuff. And to top it all off, if you buy a good brand they\'re actually sharper than scalpels; and you know what they say about a sharp knife...

Well, I agree and disagree.

I have about 25 knives of various types, for lots of different jobs.

Ive got a swann morton scalpel, in a 25 (I think) and a vets scale swann morton one, which is about half the size, I mostly use those two for slicing plastic, making small cuts etc, or mold lines.

Ive got craft knives from the 10mm blades, to a 40mm blade.

Dremel bits out the wazoo, and saws from 10mm cutters, to big ork sized jobbies.

Speaking of dremel bits, again, does anyone have two old saw blades, I want them for a conversion, so blunts cool, the same things as the chaos dreadnought hellblade for those who remember it.

Exactly, everything that my mate, Einion, said up there. :D

My dad was a trackhead, and his mates learnt to use craft knives instead of scalpels - the hard way. I\'d rather not experience first-hand what a scalpel blade is capable of when flying through the air.

most of my tools i use for modelling as far as cutting are concerned come from a dissection kit.

The blades are VERY sharp and will provide awesome definition and clarity in your cuts. As far as durability is concerned the only time i have broken a blade is when i have lacked patience and hacked rather than whittled. A good saw is a perfect foil to a good scalpel (schwann morten all the way) it does the rough stuff and the blade makes it pretty.

As far as the GW issue.

1)volume: do these guys sell enough to have a narrow profit margin compared to a tool company which has a market demographic?

no therefore unit profit must be higher to cover risk and investment.

2)little jonny who has just started the hobby wants to put his shiny new marines together but he has no tools does he:

a) pay the higher but available instore prices of GW

b)make his own way onto to a dark dingy industrial estate to a home depot equivalent and take his chances in the 100 aisles filled with everything known to man and the least helpful retail staff known to man.

Roger, did you know that if you drop a scalpel with a 26 blade 3 feet it will penetrate a leather boot and stick in your foot?

I do.

But in my defence, I havent really cut myself with a scalpel that many times, its mostly using things that arent meant to be used as knives, like scissors, which sliced the tip of my right thumb pretty bad.

Or the microwave plate, which opened my left thumb up from top to bottom.
