Hi,

I was in my local gaming store today and got talking to the owner (as you do:rolleyes:). He said that a new version of D & D was coming out (version 3.5) and that theres a new line of miniatures coming out based on the new monster manual. Any US folks got any more info on this rumour???

Cheers

It\'s true but....(brace yourself) it will be prepainted (like the mageclickx thingies) plastic minis with a normal base (unlike the clickx-system). They will be quite cheap $ 20 for 16 figures (1 R, 5U, 10C) or $10 for 8 figures (1R, 3U, 4C). more information: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ms/20030606a
There ya go, break out the breakingliquid if you want to paint them yourself, I\'d say.
PS: i\'m not a \"US-folk\" hope you don\'t mind :D

just a quick extra note...

The thing about D&D 3.5 is also correct, it shoud offer a better balance than 3.0... I think we\'ll wait a while before changing over. (cheaper that way :))

Oh no! How disappointing!! I was hoping for something more on the lines of the Reaper figs or Ral Partha\'s AD & D minis!!:~(

It gets worse. The minis will be packaged RANDOMLY. What GM in his right mind would buy a pack of random minis for his carefully crafted campaign??

Seriously, I hate what WoTC is doing to the D&D...

Firstly, although its okie to be plastic but being pre-painted sucks! Their paint job (most probably by machine) is terrible and it\'s so hard to remove this paint.
Secondly, they are packing it randomly. They claim that it\'s better but it\'s just their way of cashing it. You will get 100 goblins before getting one dragon!
Thirdly, when I saw some of the pics of these minis, it made me puck!

The idea behind the random packaging is that that way the rarer figs wil be relatively cheaper and that noone really needs more than one black dragon at a time. You would then get the figures you need by trading. Some people I know actually like the idea of buying relatively cheap painted minis. i would have preferred figures like reaper produces (still the best for use in D&D!) but alas...

Uggh!
The trading and keeping up with all of the cards is what burned me out on Magic. I stopped buying cards just after Ice Age. If I wanted another collectable it definitly would not be these pieces of crap.
Which brings me to your point of being cheap..
As a DM I would be totally embarrased to put anything like this on my board....

And THIS is the OFFICIAL PHOTGRAPHS
:|~

They should have just stayed with the unpainted, metal Chainmail figures and repackaged them for D&D. I will NOT spend money on crap like this.. Looks like it came out of a gumball machine

urgh, this one is even worse than the ones i saw. I don\'t think this fig would score above what? 3.5? I would actually prefer to buy the figures without the paint at the same price, they would actually look lots better....

And the best part is what they say about the random packaging ahum, I quote WotC:

// Actual game-play can also benefit from random packaging. //

end-quote and again, HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

I don\'t really see the intended audience for the figures to be the people who post at CMoN -- of course we\'re going to find the pre-painted figures ugly.

I, on the other hand, don\'t mind the random thing as much as everyone else. For a small collection it sucks, but I think once you pick up around 100 figures you\'ll start building up a reasonable assortment of figures that don\'t need any time to play. And at that point you design the module/adventure around what you have, and to fill those last few holes you buy the miniatures you need from Reaper.

Anyway, I noticed that Amazon is listing the starter set at 30% off, so I picked up a few. Painted figures for around $0.87 each! Can\'t beat that!

maybe so with the random thing, but as we know from cardgames and wizkids stuff, is that random usually means \"no choice\" and \"duplicate commons by the bucketful\"

Temperance has a point, the people who put out these products aren\'t looking for the hardcore painters as costomers. They\'re appealing to the little kids who\'d probably eat the paint given a chance to paint minis themselves. Its a matter of audience, not quality. I remember, back in the day, before I got into mini gaming, I tried painting a D&D model and it was a pain.

Normal D&D players don\'t have paints, and brushes, let alone time to sit there and paint minis. So, thats the group of people these products apply to.

If the company were smart, they\'d have 2 lines of miniatures. One, the current cheaply painted ones, and the second a better quality unpainted maybe even pewter model. Even if they were more expensive, they\'d still attract an audience.

Have fun!

I\'m not a big fan of plastic figures to be honest, and I hate pre-painted stuff (still, I guess it keeps Far Eastern sweat shops in the money!). The pic Lurch posted is indicitive of the kind of crap that some companies are happy to churn out. Gum ball machine toys is the best description I\'ve heard for this kind of rubbish. Maybe I\'m being elitest, but does anyone else think that pre-painted, plastic crap is detrimental to the miniatures hobby? It\'s lacking in detail, it doesn\'t encourage creativity, and it demeans the whole miniatures industry by giving the impression that what we sculpt and paint is just a toy that kids swap in the playground!

Or it can introduce people to a new hobby in an inexpensive way -- more people buying miniatures, more kinds of miniatures that can be made...

It could be a good thing in the end.

I agree but...

Sturmhalo, I agree with everything you have said, but I think we need to compare like with like. A lot of young kids really want to get into miniatures and gaming but their painting skills simply wont let them. Whilst these figures are a travesty to the educated eye of the CMON poster, if they encourage young people to get interested in minis then they do serve a purpose.

I remember my dad bought me a Mechano set because he wanted me to be an engineer. It worked, I became an engineer. (Have career swapped since then mind you).

How many kids have bought a box of GW miniatures and opened them up expecting to see something that looked like the box illustration? Quite a few I would imagine.

I am not supporting this sort of low-level merchandise, but I do feel that it does serve a purpose and without an up-coming generation any hobby is dead in the water.:flip:

\"\"\"If the company were smart, they\'d have 2 lines of miniatures. One, the current cheaply painted ones, and the second a better quality unpainted maybe even pewter model.\"\"\"

they do, the other line is called reaper which D&D really couldnt compete with in price. sculpting was near even but also D&D\'s line was much smaller at the time.

at 1st this looks bad but yeah it probably appeals slightly in cost and pre paint to gamers who cant paint and even they can shade wash the plastic figures easy enough.

i think the 1st of them is coming out in about 3 months, i saw me advertised in the latest previews magazine.

with reaper in the water official D&D minis are a dead cause. if D&D had the marbles they would strike some deal with reaper and claim its the official D&D line unless of course reaper ever comes out with thier supposed own rpg system (did that get canned again?)

new rules for D&D, that sucks, sounds like there into the GW update dealy now.
