So, I'm a little new to posting here...
But that's not to say I've haven't been around for a long time looking at every ones awesome art work!
I wanted to get a foot in here, mainly, for two reasons;
1. When you work around others who are better then yourself and you set a par at a higher level then you really comfortable with, you grow and learn. Plain and simple.
2. It's nice to be around people who like to do what you do.

That being said, I should introduce myself!

My names Adam and I'm a Music Education Major at Nyack College in Nyack, NY. My instrument is voice and have practicing for a while now. I got into Warhammer 40k at a place 7 min outside of my current college, 5 years before I started attending it! I just liked to play the game so painting never really came to mind. This may be due in part to none of my friends painting there models, so I didn't see the need; But, I was at the time perusing a future studio art degree as a Concept Artist, so it wasn't far off the beaten path. Just recently, my friend and I went out and grabbed some paint supplies and just started to paint some miniatures we had lying around and had a great time! I always understood what I had to when I painted; contrast, NMM, shading, lighting, texure. I just never tried to do it. The day after our painting session, I went and grabbed an old 'Nid Gaunt and gave him my undivided attention (mind you this is a month ago). Although, I didn't have the time to finish him I dare say he came out pretty good! I'm impressed with myself!

So, now it's come to the point where I want to do this more often and get a little serious about it. With Christmas on it's way, and still under the financial umbrella of my parents, I asked for some painting supplies! You have NO CLUE how excited I am! Heres some of the things I'm asking for...

---Plasticard Variety Pack: 9 Pieces
---Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Miniatures Brush #000 (I have a 0,1,3, and a 5 brush already lying around)
---Vallejo Game Color Range Box Set
---Army Painter Kneadatite Green Stuff - 8" Strip x2
---MASTER AIRBRUSH MODEL G23 SPECIFICATIONS: Dual-Action

I'm so excited!
Do you guys think this is a good start? I have some plans set up for a work station down in the basement and install some indoor flood lights.

God bless!
Adam

Welcome Adam. It's always nice to see new faces - we've been getting a lot of them recently, and it's been good.

I would suggest getting some Slo-Dri and flow improver for those paints (I use Liquitex brand, YMMV), along with a small palette that has some shallow wells for liquid mixes; all together they're about $15 at most craft stores. Vallejo is always too thick for me to work with straight out of the bottle, so this's the stuff I use to thin it out.

And if you do get the plastic case, experiment with a smoky ink and flow improver mix on your golds, it does some neat stuff.

i would recommend getting only one gs (and if you can, get the separate rolls rather than the strip- it tends to go crappy in the middle) also get some magic sculp or apoxie sculp. i find them a lot easier to work with. also when mixed with gs, you can change the properties of either quite a lot. it covers a lot of bases

best water bases metallics i have ever tried are the vallejo air colour ones. mental

i would also recommend the p3 off whites and the vmc offwhite and german cam black brown

i agree with rev though - put some pics up!!

welcome

Welcome to the hobby.. again :p
You might want to include a decent pair of snips, xuron make outstanding ones, and I think the privateer press ones are just repackaged xurons. Also, a hobby knife, as your in the US and can get xacto blades fairly cheap, go for an exacto, but don't forget to square off the handle, so it doesn't roll off the table and stab you in the foot. (yes, I speak from experience)
Some cheap needle files would be a good idea too, you can get those from just about any hardware store, don't get suckered into paying for gamesworkshop tools!

Hmmm.. anything else, oh yeah, the obvious, make your you've got plenty of plastic cement and superglue :D It wouldn't be Christmas without managing to glue your fingers together :D

First off, Welcome aboard.
Your list looks good. only advice as mentioned earlier get the GS in two seperate tubes not the ribbon, lasts longer and is generally cheaper by volume. The airbrush looks good also but first try to find out how easy it is to find parts. An airbrush is no good if you accidentally bend the needle and can't replace it. One more thing, if you are buying/getting an airbrush, seriously look into a compressor. Do a search of the forum, airbrushes and compressors has been discussed earlier.

Welcome aboard. I second the call for Vallejo Cam Black Brown, I also swear by Vallejo Black Red as my second most used color.

But the most important thing is to throw some pics around and ask for honest advice. You'll get it!
