New Pro-Arte Brushes

Compare those prices to THESE... Pure kolinsky sable of the highest quality for less than a quid extra.

In my experience, even pricey synthetic brushes tend to hook after a while.

Never had a synthetic round that didn\'t hook, more pointed the worse it hooks it seems. I\'ve even watched it happen on the first use

Not that this makes the brush unusable - that blunter tip can be very useful - but if you want a sharp tip that stays sharp Kolinsky is the way to go, no question.

I don\'t think they are for Miniatures.. but that they are miniature..as in small..

Yeah synthetics hook very quickly.. spend the extra for a quality sable.

Actually, I\'m gonna play devil\'s advocate and say that synthetics have their uses. Getting paint out of pots and mixing it, base coats, drybrushing, poking glue around, all the things you\'d die before using your kolinsky for, in other words! lol

Ugh - I hate synthetic. I only have them for jobs that I refuse to put my Vallejo brushes through. Stippling, applying powdered pigment, large terrain projects, and applying glue to bases.

When I get synthetics for jobs that will thrash my good brushes, I just go to Michaels or Walmart and buy the cheapest pack I can find.

You can\'t go wrong with a good Kolinsky sable brush - take good care of it, clean it after each use, and keep paint out of the ferrule, it will last for a long, long time.

EDIT: lol Amazon you beat me to it!

This is a very timely discussion for me, as I desperately need to invest in some new brushes. I\'m waiting to see what my local hobby shop has in stock, as I have a very good coupon to use this weekend. If they don\'t have any good sable brushes for sale, could someone reccomend a US site to purchase Kolinsky brushes from?

Synthetic brushes are awesome... quite apart from having them on hand for things you wouldn\'t want to subject a Kolinsky to you can use them to share the load - for undercoats and basic painting - before you go in with the super-sharp brushes for final details.

Plus, I\'m sure I\'m not the only one that doesn\'t own too many 4-6s in Kolinsky for larger areas; just too damned costly at that size - forty, fifty bucks is a heck of a lot for one brush!

^^ All of that!!

I\'ve got plenty of synthetic brushes and they see lots of use. Particularly great for drybrushing (they actually get better with time/use!) and for hitting edges with sharp highlights. I even used hooked ones to get into hard to reach places :D

On the subject of Pro-Arte - try their Renaissance range of sable brushes. Cheap, very good quality and seem to be readily available in many UK art shops.

I really don\'t like synthetics, I\'m always disappointed, I\'d rather use a cheap sable like GW.

Synthetics definately have their place, depending on what you\'re working on.

My local hobby shop had crappy brushes. Out of the 5 I tested, only one would keep a point!

I broke down and invested in some Kolonsky brushes (from the CMON store, of course ;))- I\'m excited to see how they perform after hearing so many good things

Synthetics really do require a different approach to painting. I buy em cause I can\'t convince my wife that good sable brushes will last long enough, but I don\'t mind. The hook doesn\'t bother me too much. I make very few dots, so a hook tip that I can drag where I want is just fine.
