Hey people,
I picked up a load of Storm of Magic stuff at the weekend and after opening up all the boxes, found that the scenery caught my attention more than the rest.
From the pictures I had seen I wasn't sure what I'd make of it, but once I opened up the boxes I was surprised by the size of the pieces. A lot bigger than I'd thought with really funky details all over them and a very reasonable price tag. Clever stuff! What was less clever was how they went together. Because they are mostly made of large plastic parts, they had got slightly warped on the sprues. Now, this is common with a lot of plastic stuff, but when the parts take up the length of an entire sprue it's rather magnified! This resulted in a few collapses as I tried to construct them (collapses of the models, not my own mental stability, although the Throne column did test it!) so it's something to be aware of if you are thinking of getting any.
Despite this, I'm pretty impressed with the kits, and a lot of the parts could be mixed together to create new scenery features too.
I really enjoyed painting them up and I feel pretty happy with how they look, particularly because I did them rather efficiently, essentially starting them midday on Sunday, painting until the evening, then adding final touches to them before work on Monday. The swirly vortex was completed first and I would perhaps go back and re-do some parts if it wasn't up on Ebay already. It's not that I'm unhappy with it, but I just don't think it's quite as good as the other three. They've all been done with a mixture of airbrushing to begin with, and then more traditional methods to finish them off. The Eternity Stair is possibly my favorite, and I think there are some good little nuances of colour through the rocks of the stairs that add interest.
I won't post the pictures here, because they are really tall and going to cause people a lot of scrolling, but please check them out and let me know what you think. Even though they are for Ebay it's good to get feedback and know what folks think of the techniques. If anyone would like to know any more details about the kits and the paint jobs ask away.
Right, I have the day off work so I'm going to have a go at the plastic monsters today. I have it worked out in my head how I'll approach them, so hopefully I'll have them ready in a day or so.
