Hello, everyone - I just wanted to do a little introduction post, cause I have a feeling as I walk down this long, yet familiar road, I'm going to be seeking the advice of people who have traveled it before.

A long time ago, I began painting (when you could still buy Polly Paints at Gamer's Paradise.)

Painted, stopped, paints dried up.

Got bit by the bug again. Spent a fortune on GW, new tools, and was given some *pristine* Dragonscale.

Painted, stopped, gave paints away to one of the guys who had gotten me into it.

Moved across the country. Began a gaming group about 2 years ago.

About 2 months ago, my gaming group (including my cousin) started kicking around the idea of painting minis again.

Split the cost on the tools and paints, bought a ton of Reaper minis from Cool Stuff, a **very nice** paint setup from Vallejo, and here I sit, waiting for all the boxes to begin showing up at my doorstep.

I cannot say I consider myself to be an advanced painter by ANY stretch. I play guitar, and so I understand that if you don't practice your craft consistantly, you don't improve, and over time, you can actually lose some of your ability.

While I'm not advanced, I don't consider myself to be a newbie, either. I've probably done about 40 miniatures, total, for myself and others, and have never been told it was horrible.

I'm going to really try to be focusing on layering and wet blending techniques, something I've never really messed with before, so if I have questions, they will probably be in that vein.

Anyway, for a first post, I think you guys have enough to go on for now. Give me a few weeks to get my stuff in and some stuff painted, and I'll be looking forward to any help or advice you guys can offer.

Cheers!

Welcome back to the hobby. You have probably seen how much it has advanced since you last painted. Ask away once you get started. What part of the US are you in?

Thin your paints.
Clean moldlines.
Drill barrels.
Use a neutral background on the pictures.
Learn to decipher the mad, and crazy critics. I am trying to say something, and it isn't an attack, it is just me thinking and trying to put words to the thought. :smile-big:
Have fun, and step lightly in the bar, there be Freaks. You have been warned.:devil::devil::tremble!::tremble!::skeleton::skeleton:

Welcome. The best advice I can give you right now is to start posting in the Work in Progress forum. The main gallery can be a bit harsh, especially if you're just getting back into painting after a long break. The Work in Progress forum tends to give out a lot more constructive advice.

What part of the bay area are you in? I lived there for about 7-8 years. If I remember correctly the Game Kastle down in San Jose had a painting group that met regularly. I also spent plenty of money on minis at Games of Berkeley while I was at UCB.

There's also a club down in Southern CA that has a yearly show (in March I believe). I've never been, but depending on how serious you get into painting it's something to consider. They're mostly historical however there are some fantasy/sci-fi entries as well. Below is a link to their show report from 2011. Jump to page 15 for some of the gaming figure entries.

Gamer's Paradise?!? Were you in the Chicago area? 'Cause I used to get all my games stuff from them. (Not paint, though. I used Liquitex acrylics from the art supply store.) And how long ago? The chance that we knew each other is slim, but it's always nice to hear of other long-time gamers.

Bay Area, CA, now.

I'm about 45 minutes south of SF.

Thanks for this info, I've been looking for a decent gaming store around here lately - I'll have to check that place out. There is only really 1 game shop near my home, and its not bad, but its nothing spectacular, either. Their paint selection is also pure GW...which, the more I have thought about, the more I have realized that I think that helped to contribute to me never excelling as a painter. I'll happily explain that to anyone who wants it - I'm not knocking GW paints, neccessarily, but I am knocking their bottles, and my own lack of foresight.

Lived in Chicago all my life, up till 3 years ago. The particular ones I went to were in Chicago Ridge Mall, and Orland Square, but I had a pretty solid group of my own, so I never really met up with any other groups or people from it.

Stuff should start coming in tomorrow. I just placed another order from Amazon, and my current bill to re-create my kit is running around $550. Can't say I'm super happy about that, but there is, at this point, not one thing I can think of that I need, and I knew I would eat a huge cost to start with.

It's really surprising to me, though, how many "Hobby Stores" don't carry quality products, or even stuff that would be considered to be almost standard for painting. (Brush Cleaners or a decent porcelain pallate being the 2 that shocked me the most.)

With any luck, and as long as my estimated delivery times are REASONABLY accurate, I should have brush to mini starting sometime mid next week.
