New to Vallejo, am thinking about buying a set...

Hey guys,

I am hoping to purchase paints from the Vallejo paint range, because I have heard they are very good. I am likely to be painting all sorts of miniatures, Games Workshop, Confrontation etc, but am not likely to be playing with them, as I am only really interested in the hobby aspect. So what would you recommend - Model Colour or Game Colour?

I am hoping to purchase the Thor model from http://www.griffinminiatures.com as some of you may know, so do you have any idea of the best paints to use for that model? Vallejo, or just Games Workshop\'s paints (which I have many of anyway).

I have a lot of Games Workshop paints, so is there really any point in purchasing some Vallejo paints, if I am only going to be painting the miniatures for show, and not for playing?

Personally, I think Vallejos are better and that\'s all the reason I need. Both the actual paint, the paint pots and the range of colours are better with Vallejos and if you want a particular colour in the GW range, you can find an almost identical one in the Game Color range. However, you can always mix Vallejo paints with GW paints so there\'s no need to throw away all your GW paints. You can also buy Vallejo paints a few at the time as your old paints gets emptied or if you want a colour that\'s not available in the GW range. No need to go buy all colours at once.

But, I switched to Vallejos, and I\'m never going back to GW! :D

Do you recommend a certain set to buy, containing the basic colours (of Vallejo) which should contain what I need for the Thor model?

I\'m not really familiar with their sets, since I\'ve bought all my paints individually. But I can have a look and come back here to answer in a while. I do know what colours I would want for the Thor model. I get back soon!

hey thalin, I have just bought the mega paint set from citadel (GW) and it\'s quite a full range. I would only buy specific colours from Vallejo if I were you, there\'s no sense on buying another red if you already have one (unless you are an extremely good painter and you notice the difference). However, for example, Vallejo has millions of green tones or purples, while GW has only a few of them. So, in conclusion, Vallejo offers you dozens of colours you would obtain by mixing plain citadel. And, I reccomend you to use Model colour, as Game colour gives sometimes a shiny effect ( I say it for experience) Hope this helps.....;)

Ok, I checked at Fantization where they sell Vallejo paints, both in sets and individually. It is of course difficult to find a set that suits your need perfectly, but there were a few sets that contains a lot of paints I find very useful.

Problem with sets are, of course, that you\'ll still need other colours that you won\'t get in the sets and some colours you may get two of if you buy several sets. I would still suggest you buy paints individually and pick out a few at the time, that you think cover your immediate needs. Or, buy one set and then complement with individual paints.

Vallejo Game Colours are copies of the Citadel colours. I have never had any problems with them giving a shiny effect -no more than any other acrylic paint range anyway. Certainly not an issue if you use Dullcoat.....

Take a look at the Vallejo website for swatches for all their ranges.

Overall, I\'d recommend Vallejo, but don\'t go overboard with buying a whole set or anything...just ease them into your collection slowly. Honestly, they are a bit hit and miss in my experience. A friend of mine who is also on this site, Dennismech, became a bit of a believer until he ran into problems with grainy pigment. I\'ve had issues, too. Some colours I\'ve had great success with, and outstrip my GW paints by far, but others have been horribly shiny (this was model colour, btw), no matter what I tried. I ended up redoing an entire mini because of it. I don\'t want to be a damper, as they are awesome paints, but I\'d recommend going slowly, like others have said.

I love my Vallejo paints, but I have two gripes:

1. They need to make inks. Smoke is nice, but I want the other colors too.

2. I believe GW metallics are still superior to the Vallejo equivallent. I get nowhere near the depth of color from the Vallejo metallic as I can from the GW.

I bought the 5 basic Game Color vallejo pack, and I am not too pleased with them. For starters, they smell/taste aweful. The black is shiny and is almost like a deep grey as it is not the pure black that my GW black is. They don\'t water down as well as my GW ones. I will probably buy a selected few model colors from vallejo to give them another go, but I wouldn\'t advise buying the 5 pack Basic Game Colors from Vallejo.

both sets of paints are great. i\'d say paint with what you\'ve got.learn which colours you need to get (eg if you have to mix a lot of one colour) its great to have lots of paints but it can be a nightmare finding that off shade of purple/grey tint when you have 300 paint pots clogging up your table! if you believe that vallejo will improve your painting then go with them. i find familiarity the best aid to my painting. learn what your paints can do and what they can\'t. to be honest you will learn a lot more from using a few basic colours and mixing them together. i have never really grown out of the original GW starter range of paints. gw colours are bright and work well for fantasy figures that need contrast, i have found that the vallejos are very good soft tones to mix into GW colours. vallejo i feel has a nigh on unbeatable range of tones/shades in certain colours, but however it is down to you whether you like to mix your colours or layer them like the foundry paintsystem.

btw when i was at university i once went a whole year only painting with five paints (white, cyan (blue), magenta(red), yellow and black. you would be surprised what you can do with only these five. mind you i would have liked a few earthy browns:duh:
