2. I\'m having trouble deciding which game to get into Warhammer or Warhammer 40 k im kinda leaning tward warhammer cause the sci fi setting doesnt appeal to me that much

3. Can someone explaint he battle system for both games they seem different in warhammer it sees you move a bunch of characters all at onea nd in 40 k you seem to move only a few

Thank you for any help you can give me

Where abouts are you located. In my scummy little corner of the world it\'s the middle of the Easter holidays so I\'m not surprised if it was full of kids. Try going in on a normal weekday or better still a find out when your vets only night is. If you can get to a GW store then your best bet is to go in and ask them to run you an intro for both systems. As you aren\'t a kid (you are never too old to play with toy soldiers just look at Dragonsreach :p ) they will try to pitch it more at an adult level with more emphasis on the mechanics of the system and the background rather than the zap! Pow! style intro aimed at younger beginners. I used to do it for a living at one point so I\'m speaking from experience, if you tell them what you\'re interested in they\'ll give you the best advice.

In a nutshell 40k works on a skirmish basis with individual models adopting a loose formation whereas fantasy tends to have models fighting as part of a regimented unit. Obviously there\'s more to it than that but that is the most obvious difference in the way the games are played. Personally I would say that fantasy is ever so slightly more complicated than 40k because of the way the units manoever and the combat resolutions etc. for this reason it tends to be favoured by the more mature players.

If you\'re having trouble with the fantasy/sci-fi aspects of the games you could always try Warhammer Historical. Just pick your favourite period in history and chances are someone will make a miniatures line for it.

I didn\'t even know about this hobby until I was 33. So you\'ve got a six year jump on me. lol

for the price of a battleforce for either game you could get both skull pass and BfM. each come with a mini rule book that explains the game. you would then be able to decide which one you like better.

or you should be able to play a few games at the GW store and see which one has rules you prefer.

i personally chose 40k for a few reasons. i don\'t like the movement trays and moving an enitre regiment of fantasy at once. seems like it would be too stagnant and staged looking while playing.

fantasy costs more. while boxed units cost about the same from what i know fantasay requires more for an army than 40k.

as long as you are old enough to not try to eat the minis or their bits then you are old enough to play warhammer. heck i know a 70+ year old man that plays that yugioh card game..

40k rules in a nutshell are move, shoot, assault. you don\'t need a movement tray as units only need to be within two inches of another mini to still be a unit or in cohesion. of course 40k has guns and stuff.

fantasy has magic, and both have psionics/psykers.

hope this helps explain in some way. but let your own choice based on the games and how they play for you make up your mind.

Yes go into GW shop and ask, what days they play for adults, try out both games, and see which appeals.
there usually very helpfull, then you can decide which game/army to collect.
good luck, I\'m just painting the figures, but keep thinking of going along and having a go:D oh I\'m 48, with a 9 yr old son who\'s interested in it as well.lol

WHFB seam to me to be played by \'older\' folks around here. Less Bang Pow and more tactical thinking. But then again this is my observations on the subject.

I have a question about warhammer 40 k point system

i bought the rule book today and im reading it but it seems you make armies using points

whats the lowest point army you can have to battle

i can\'t seem to find it in the rule book

I\'d suggest you play with the system/army that you like the looks of the most. You are going to be spending a significant amount of time painting them and it\'d be a chore if you didn\'t like them aesthetically.

I play both systems but I favor fantasy because ...well...I just favor fantasy over scifi anyway. I play Brets on the Fantasy side and Eldar on the 40k side. I found a group of guys that tends to show up on Tuesday nights at the GW store to play which is great because most of the kiddos aren\'t out on a \"school night.\"

I\'m 29 (or at least I will be next Friday) with a wife and 4 year old son.

About the smallest games you can really effectively have will typically involve approx 500 points. The points values are found in the respective codices and army books for the army you choose.

it doesn\'t.

When you go to play a game against an opponent, you two decide how large the game will be. If you decide on a 500 point game that\'s what you play. If you decide on a 2000 point game you can play that too (and that\'s kinda the \'sweet spot\' with either system). With the new \'apocolypse\' expansion for 40k the upside size potential is basically unlimited.

Depending on your army (in Fantasy) and the game itself (in 40k) you are required to have a minimum of x number of troops of certain types (like 40k requires you to have a minimum of one HQ selection and 2 troops choices for most standard missions) but aside from that you can pretty much do as you wish within the parameters of the army books and rulebook.

no...but it\'s really about as low as you can realistically go and have a serious game. Anything lower is basically a skirmish.

The games are very open...there really aren\'t minimums and maximums (beyond compulsory choices) but you get a feel for size after playing a few games.

the only thing the rulebook really states as minimum is the force organization chart.

2 troops and 1 HQ for some scenarios are the minimum required units.

others may have other minimum number or units. some armies have specifics. for example Tau must have 1 Fire Warrior troop unit, and you can choose the other one and the HQ choice.

again a scenario may alter this force organization (FOC) chart by having one player have only troops. i remember an old meat grinder that had nids with only troops and the other player got the standard FOC.

it depends on what you and your opponent choose since it is mostly a points based minis game. if you want to play with 500 points then you can. but you are not required to have exactly 500 points, but you cannot have over 500 points, officially. houserules you may be able to get by with a few points over, but not many. say 508 may be allowed depedning on your opponenet and whether they want to brow beat you with the rules and points.

their is also a scenario in the rulebook about kill-teams. i am not sure what its point system is, but i think it is the smallest armies you can make and play.

Bone Monkey the points listings are in the army Codex Books. You\'ll have to look at the army of choice to get the correct points. 500 points is the least you should expect to play with as that will give you a game that should last an hour or so. (Garbage dice rolls not withstanding).
500 points of Space Marines will not be a large force, but 500 points of Imperial Guard will be a lot more figures.

As a number of people have suggested the Battalion/Army force box sets (£50) are reasonable value for a starter basis for an army.
Most armies in 40K have + and - points towards how they perform against varying opponent armies.
Space Marines are probably the easiest \'all rounders\'. But as it\'s you paying out and painting them you should make your own choice.

I got into 40k at the tender age of 36, last year, when the Dark Angels army box was released.

If you care about the quality of the models, I would stay away from the Battle for Macragge, as the plastic is cheap and the sculpts are made for easy assembly by kids who don\'t care about mold lines or painting.
That\'s why that box set is so inexpensive comparatively.
In either WFB or 40k, first figure out which army appeals to you most. Then look for the Army Book or Codex for that army.
You can find lots of great deals on both WFB and 40k on ebay.

I agree the marines from BoM are a bit on the basic side but the tyrannids are pretty much indistinguishable from the normal box set ones. Buying loads of BoM termagants from places like Battlewagon Bitz is a great way to fill an \"endless swarm\" formation.

The downed aquila lander terrain is also very nice indeed. At the time it was the main reason I bought it.

If your getting into 40k it also depends on what you like. If you like fast attack then go for The White Scars, very fast. If you like the more agressive side with hand to hand combat go for Space Wolves, there like Sapce Vikings. If you like aliens then Tyranids or Elday even though there kina complacated and what not. Or if you like not so smart aliens go with orks. It all depends on you and what you feal is best.
