Newbie looking for help

I´m not a newbie painter - I´m painting for close to eight years now. I have improved a lot over that time, up to a point where people paid me to paint their minis.

But I´m new to this professional approach I see in many articles here. In fact, I am astonished by all the stuff you can do with a little paint.

I feel that I have reached a stage where I cannot improve my painting without some new ideas. I posted one of a minis here
www.coolminiornot.com/66913.

Could you comment on it, and tell me what I could do to make it better?

Freodin\'s mini!

As for the mini..... It\'s not bad. It is quite hard to give help unless you see an extreme \'warts and all\' closeup. Some areas look textured, particularly the cloak. Thinner paint helps here. The only other things are that the sword is bent (you\'ll get hammered for it, trust me...) and the colour scheme seems quite haphazard. The warm colours, esp. the reds seem a little contradictory. They also draw attention from the face. I think it\'s in the seven range - that\'s what I gave it. A good mini, I hope this helps.:D

EDIT! How rude of me.... WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!:D:D:cool:

i think this mini is pretty good, with good details and a nice darklining

my first advice is to work a little more on the base, which is not at the same level of the mini itself: maybe a little static grass would help, or some snow if you want to keep the cold theme!

Ah, sorry. I´m used to boards where links are automatically included.

Well, you always learn something new. I will remember it the next time.

edit: And the quoting does also seem to be different that what I am used to.

Have patience, folks. I´m trying!

Photography is another field where I am a total newbie. I´m really glad that there are digital cameras around now - I would be completely lost with usual photos.

I´ll try that.

Ah. Well, it´s a field mini. Even if I paint all my minis as single models, I don´t think this is something that will be noticed in the battlefield. And as it does not refer to my painting, I couldn´t care less for a few hammerings. :)

..and the colour scheme seems quite haphazard. The warm colours, esp. the reds seem a little contradictory. They also draw attention from the face.
Here I would be thankful for further advice. I didn´t want to follow GW´s common white/blue style, and I liked the old-style White Lions, so I decided for red.
How would you suppose I change it, so that it isn´t too heavy?

I think it\'s in the seven range - that\'s what I gave it. A good mini, I hope this helps.:D

Thank you very much. I see I will like it here!

Try working on your metallics a bit more. I\'m guessing that you use Citadel colour. If you want good solid warm gold colours then work up from a Tin Bitz base up to the required metallic effect. Also try to avoid heavy drybrushing on things like sword blades try layering or blending. Just a bit of practice and you\'ll crack it.

You could try pastel shades? Perhaps making more neutral colours by adding creams or greys? Just suggestions, and it\'s more a matter of taste really. As for the bent sword, I only mentioned it cos I got a ragging about it on one of mine!!lol
