NMM: all or none?

is it ok to combine NMM techniques and use metallic paints on the same model or would it not match. i want to start trying NMM but i know there is a lot of small details on models that would be hard to paint in good looking NMM. just wonderring if i did NMM on the larger areas and things that i want to really stand out and just use metallics for the smaller metal details would it look ok?

The only time I do this is if I am painting a banner. (Or any cloth) I will use NMM on the banner as it is cloth, but metallics on the rest.

Don\'t mix real metallics and NMM! It doesn\'t look good!

BTW, I think smaller details are generally easier to paint with NMM than larger areas. So, don\'t let that stop you. I suggest trying NMM out on minis that don\'t have overly much metal surfaces on them to begin with. When you get a little bit more comfortable with the methods you can try it out on a mini with full plate armour or something.

Yup I agree with Matty, you can mix both when there\'s cloth and metal. Cloths done in TM looks stupid to me, so you do it in NMM then you can do the rest in TM or NMM.

I just want to second Ritual on the idea that smaller areas are easier to start NMM with. Larger areas require smoother transitions that are difficult and annoying to achieve, particularly with gray-scale NMM, whereas less smooth transitions are often needed (or at least not noticeable) on smaller areas. But you still get practice thinking about where the light is coming from and where the hotspots and shadows should be and so on.

With a few exceptions (a realistic style of the type more commonly used in historical modelling) IMO all or none.

which is why i can\'t do nmm!!

Yeah, I agree about small bits - much easier to handle when you can just do little light spots on trinkets and things :D

Here\'s an interesting mini to consider...

Very impressive, in the photo at least.

good example Bill! I think the mask and bionic eye look more like grey ceramite (the materials used for power armour as opposed to metal, as real metallics have also been used.

I only mix metals and nmm when the nmm would be on a banner or cloth as said before.

can you explain what you mean by NMM on a banner? a banner is cloth, not metal so i don\'t understand what you mean.

Not sure really, i tried to explain, but didn\'t really make sense. I suppose it just looks better (IMO anyway)

Banners were often embroidered with gold and silver to make them look more impessive. This will make the areas shimmer in a metallic way, but still it doesn\'t look like solid metal so that\'s why you can paint this in NMM while still doing regular metallic areas with real metallics.

Yep, what ritual said!

You yourself have also hit the nail on the head too!- A banner is cloth and not metal, so if you were to paint a gold or silver design on a banner in metallics it would look odd. This is why banners and \'golden\' cloth look better in NMM

In my opinion gold almost always looks better NMM especially for embroidery on cloth as others described. On the other hand steel or silver has never in my opinion looked convincing as a metallic object. But instead looks like stone. So real metallics for that.

In my opinion the master at Golld NMM mixed with steel metallics is Jeremie Bonamant Teboul

What about a mini, like a Knight, where you have area\'s of Plate nad chainmail.

so you ahve the Plate NMM - but what about the \'mail is that easy to do int he same style, or as a Metallic?
