NMM and metallics together?

Do many people use NMM and metallics on the same mini or do you use them exclusively? I\'m asking this because i wanted to attempt a tiny bit of NMM on a mini i\'m painting atm but all the metal i\'ve painted so far is metallic. Will it look weird with parts done in NMM and others in metallics?

Yeah, it usually looks a little odd when they are both used on the same mini. I would reccomend finishing your current project in metallics.

If you just want to practice it, try painting some nmm on a spare bit or piece you have lying around.

i personally like using both together on top of each other i have found they complement each other nicely.. but then again i do enjoy licking brushes ..... a lot

Nah, using them alongside each other is going to look odd, very odd. The one has a clean comic-book feel, the other is more gritty. However, doing NMM using metallic paints is something special.

I seem to remember Alexi Z saying that she did her metallics that way a while back - the finished effect was pretty impressive too.

You can\'t have metallic non-metallic paints. You can have SEM though. Sky-Earth Metalics. Where the effect of painting a horizon like in NMM is done on or with metallic paints.

We\'re not really saying there are metalic-nonmetalic paints, we\'re saying using metalic paints in the same style as you would non-metalics ...I think.

Thanks for the replies. I thought it might look a bit weird having the two used together...lucky i asked before trying it. I think i\'ll just stick with what i know for the moment, so no NMM for me. :D

I think it can be acceptable in certain circumstances- for example- nmm in banner designs/cloth and metallic weapons/armour.

I think metallics would look odd on banners and flags as the design would have been sewn in using coloured threads to represent gold/silver.

Hope this makes sense!

That\'s a good point OrkyDave, metallics would look a bit out of place on a banner made out of cloth. I\'ll just stick with metallics for the moment till i get things like highlighting, shadow and blending going then i might try it out. My mini will have a small banner so i\'ll just avoid using any metallics or nmm on that and just keep it simple.

That\'s the way that I\'ve started doing my metallics: using metallic paints, but applying the concepts and methods of NMM/SENMM to them.

the only point imo that you can mix nmm and metallics is when you want to paint a banner or cloth of some sort!

Many painters will do gold in NMM and then the steel/silver metallics in real metallic paints. It does look good.

Ive always felt that Gold NMM looks much better than steel/silver which tends to come off as stone in my opinion.

This is basically correct. You can do NMM technique if the thing you are doing it on is not supposed to represent actual metal. I know some artists do sci-fi pieces mixing metalics and NMM where the NMM is supposed to represent ceramic or plastic weapons or armor.
Basically, if you use both, then the NMM will not look like metal no matter what because the viewer\'s eye will have a reference point on the mini that clearly looks metallic and the NMM will be different so the brain will say: if A is metal, then B is not metal.
