I've only been painting for a couple of months now. I tried to do NMM but it looked rubbish.
How do you get the white highlights on the edges so straight, bright and clean without blobs?

Keep it up! Use the side of your brush and gently build up the layers of paint. It'll work with practise ;)

Best trick to highlighting with white is a combination of both the above techniques. The side of the brush is awesome for highlighting edges and you always need to dilute the paint to the proper consistency if you what to control how flat the color comes out on a miniature...
I was shown that the thin paint in many layers is the way to go when you want competitively painted miniatures...

a good brush is vital ( by good i mean a good point not a small brush) i use a gw basecoat brush 90% of the time, because of the great point it holds and the well of the brush holds well.
next good consistency, thin, very.
then the correct ammount on your brush, too little and the paint will dry before and during your execution of your stroke, too much and you will not have controll of the paint.
last hold the brush close to the tip and be confident and precise. go fer it!

Use a size zero paintbrush, thin your paint, make sure that you do not overload the brush, and finally use the edge.
PS make sure that you brace yourself so as to not be have any type of shaking...
