Not able to do pics at the moment, and I messed up my first try when I tried to do a glaze with sunburst yellow... did not work out.
My prob at the moment is to get this... smooth and kinda realistic looking, I can't do it smooth with the hard lines at the same time, which is what you need when doing NMM gold. My first try just looks like I highlighted brown to some white ^^

Any advice on colours and/or techniques to use/stay away from?

nmm silvery type colours are tricker than the rest, it's easy to make it look like stone or appear very cartoony.
so avoid mid greys, instead aim for lots of contrast, very lights and very darks.
next is to add colour, this very important because it's the colour that places the mini in an 'enviroment' e.g. senmm (blue=sky, brown=earth)
use quite wet techniques, blends and washes
Ive seen some drybrush attempts=awfull.
