Just been into my local GW to get some more Ardcoat (gloss varnish) and have been told that they are not doing it anymore!

So in short can any one recommend a good Gloss varnish, so I can give minis some good protection please, before I dullcote it?

I take it you mean GW have stopped the spray on Ardcoat???
I have a couple of tins here at home along with some of the old purity seal that will probably see me through for a while :D
Haven\'t seen any announcements on it though and just checking their online store it seems the only sprays they are doing is black, white and rough coat, wonder when that came about.

Either way it\'s garbage.

GW are bringing out Undercoat in Pots, both Black & White. It\'s laytex based (alledgedly?) and shiney.:|~
So I\'m wondering if Chaos Black & Skull White Sprays may be about to go the journey.

Looking at the website the pots they are doing are from 2003???
Maybe they are having the same problem as Testors and Tamiya with regards to EU regulations but then even their purity seal wasn\'t that matt after they changed it a few years back so can\'t see it being that.

Ok so we need to get a list of \'decent\' alternative products.

I tried the Vallejo spray a little while ago, and it was complete tosh, so I took it back.

Any artist grade gloss medium should work. I like Liquitex.

I don\'t think that mediums and varnishes are necessarily interchangeable (unless designed to do both). I\'ve used varnishes as mediums, but not the reverse.

I do use Liquitex Gloss Varnish as a brush on varnish and sprayed through my airbrush. Seems to work well (after being covered by a matte coat or two).

The Lascaux UV Resistant matte varnish seems to do a good job (and should be available in Europe). I\'m pretty sure that I\'ve seen the Winsor & Newton varnishes in spray versions.

let me see if I understand this...

In GB, you cannot package, ship, buy or sell aerosol sprays? Or just sprays that have organic vapors?

But, you can still buy varnish (laquer, etc.) and still by organic distillates (laquer thinner, turps, mineral spirits, reducer, solvent, etc.)
Mix the two together, put it in an airbrush and spray away?

I think most of the issues are concerned with a certain substance that is now classed as a CFC which was contained in certain makes of spray varnish, don\'t ask me what its called because I can\'t remember but it was banned by the EU and as we in the UK now come under EU law as and when they feel like it despite not having voted for half the laws we have to abide by them or face heavy penalties/fines. An example being a while back where a market friut seller refused to sell by metric weight and stuck with Lbs & ozs and was taken to court :flame:

Me being an engineer of sorts can work in both metric and imperial and I often change between the 2 just to confuse the hell out of our officers or the youngsters lol

No Kevin; sorry if we\'ve given that impression but if that were the case Car paint manufacturers would have the govt hauled in to court in seconds.
We can\'t individually import via air freight any aerosol\'s due to the decrease in airpressure risking explosion in the aircraft.

Transporting aerosols via the mail in the Uk\'s ok, I\'ve purchased Dullcoate from Anentocti\'s workshop without problem.
Our Current problem is that the European Union\'s legislators have decided that In our best interests Toluene has to be banned. Since that is one of the main constituents of Dullcoate, once again we\'re screwed. :D

OK, I stand corrected.
So you can still get a lot of spray paints. Just none with toluene (sp?)/toluol/methylbenzene or phenylmethane.

Fairly nasty stuff in doses:

No wonder I always did my DulCoat outside on the patio.

it\'s tolulene in vapour form (i.e. from sprays etc) that has been banned.

you can still use products that contain tolulene as long as they are not sold in a spray can.

the fact you can obtain it and then wack it into an airbrush probably never entered brussels small beurocratic minds.

Really? Then someone should tell GW.
Look to the bottom of the page.
