Nocturna, Princess of Night

Hi all, I am in the process of painting up the Nocturna mini \"Princess of Night\". Now, this is a great mini but I am having a problem with the paint adhering to the surface of the mini. It is a resin mini, and so I sprayed it Chaos Black, applied a gloss varnish and then I applied a basecoat of Tallarn Flesh. With previous resin projects this routine has worked fine, but with this mini the paint is very easy to scratch off. Besides getting a Matt varnish to reinforce the paint is there any other ideas as to how I can get the paint not to scratch off ? Thanks a lot!

Are you de-greasing before you prime?

I never go that polava with resin, just a good scrub with hot water & detergent and a toothbrush. Then prime, no worries!

I\'d be tempted to strip and start again.

Thanks for the reply there donga666. Unfortunately, I have done quite a bit on the mini before I noticed that the paint was flaking off. I do have some paint thinner (Strypit) but it says that I should not use it on plastic type materials. Would resin be classed as a plastic in this respect?

If you have a small piece of flash from the resin you could test it in your paint thinner and see what happens, but I\'m thinking it\'ll probably do nasty things. Whereabouts are you? Your location will enable people to recommend products available in your area that you can try. I would still always test a small non-essential piece first - you don\'t want your mini dissolving before your eyes!

I\'ve been having this problem alot lately. I am working on some scenery for Modeller\'s Attic and I can\'t seem to get paint to stick to the resin they used.

I have washed every single piece in soapy hot water. I have given them a dusting of dull coat and then applied a chaos black spray and the paint is still chipping off.

Any other suggestions would be apreciated.

I did soak the pieces in soapy water and used a flannel to rub the resin. I am in Ireland, if you have any suggestions in mind (Also, I travel to the UK a lot). do you think that GW purity seal will help ?

Just a quick update, I think I will continue with painting this, and might spray on some purity sal to ensure the paint sticks to the mini. Would you advise this ?

Not sure. My first thought was that it might be rather glossy to paint on and my second was that it might not stick any better than paint. However, I\'ve not tried this myself so someone with more experience might be able to betteradvise you.

I like the way her skirt\'s shaping up! I can\'t really see the flakiness you\'re talking about, perhaps it\'s only apparent on a closer look. How much are you handling her directly, if you don\'t mind me asking? If the flaking is much worse in some places that you\'re touching regularly, it could be rubbing off that way, especially if the primer hasn\'t managed to make a good bond to the surface.

Hi there AmazonWarrior, thanks for the skirt comment lol I find that the paint is chipping away mostly on her head (the top of it) and the gravestone she is sitting on. These are places where I am handling her a lot whilst painting. What might you recommend? Just re-touch these areas at the end ?

Okay, two things: first Chaos Black is not a primer. That\'s the first thing to know; it doesn\'t stick that well so there are way better things to prime with than that.

Regardless of this, if you mount a figure properly you should rub against it very little or not at all during painting. One thing you definitely don\'t want to be doing is handling the thing directly in any way if you can avoid it.

Thanks there Einion, I will use a proper mount in the future. Is there anything you might recommend I do to protect the paint job once I am finished so that the paint does not scratch off so easily? Would purity seal spray be a good idea ? cheers!

I think you could just retouch the flaky bits, yes. Purity seal would certainly help to protect the paint job, but you might find it makes the mini quite shiny. A layer or two of the purity seal followed by a good matt varnish (see if you can get hold of Testor\'s Dullcote, or ask at a good art shop) would set you right.

I have decided to cut my losses with this one! The paint is flaking off too frequently, even with minimal contact with the mini! What I have done is submitted this one to the gallery:

I will strip the mini and start over. Any good recommendations for paint stripper that is resin safe in the UK/Ireland?

Argghhh! Disaster. I tried to thin the paint off with nail polish remover and now all the detail has melted off the mini.! ARGGHH!!! Replacement needed.........

ouch.....!!!! dont ever use nail polish remover....sorry man. hope it works out for you.
